Blazer Almanac - January 12
January 12
UAB is 6-4 in games played on this date.
1980 - UAB lost 70-65 to the Iona Gaels, coached by a young Jim Valvano.
1985 - UAB won at South Florida 58-52. The Bulls double teamed Steve Mitchell all night holding him to just 4 points. However this left James Ponder open and he scorched the Bulls for 24 points.
1987 - UAB hosted Charlotte, who was 0-11 at the BJCC. In the pregame newspaper article, Wayne Martin hinted that UAB may start playing some games at a "new practice facility" which was in the planning stages. That practice facility became Bartow Arena. UAB won 69-46. James Ponder went 9 of 12 for 22 points.
1994 - #22 UAB beat Cal State Sacramento 88-46. Robert Shannon had 19 points. Frank Haywood had 14 points and 13 rebounds.
1995 - UAB defeated Dayton 75-56.
2000 - #25 ranked Louisville came to Bartow Arena to face the 8-5 Blazers. In an ugly turnover filled game in which Louisville had 26 turnovers and UAB had 24 turnovers, the Blazers pulled the upset 56-50.
2002 - Speaking of ugly games, the game on this date was a new low for UAB. The Blazers traveled to Hattiesburg to play the 6-7 Golden Eagles. UAB made only five baskets in the first half, and only 7 in the second. 12 field goals was a new record low. The Blazers lost 50-36. 36 points is the fewest points ever scored in a game and at the time, tied a CUSA record. The Murry Bartow era was about to strike midnight.
2005 - UAB had a 16 home winning streak snapped when they lost to Charlotte 91-85.
2013 - Five years ago today, UAB hosted Memphis. Both teams struggled from behind the arc. Memphis went 1-12 and UAB went 0-13. Memphis led 19-17 in the first half, but went on a 15-3 run and never led by less than double digits the rest of the way. UAB lost 69-53.
2017 - UAB defeated Western Kentucky 72-54. Tosin Mehinti scored 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting.
