My premise is that the G5 representative is one of the 12 teams selected by the committee, and it doesn't matter whether they are ranked #12 or #25 (or worse).

My point also is what difference does it make whether a G5 team knows at any given time what the committee is thinking? Will it change who they will play the rest of the season? Will it change how they will play? Those questions are equally true of all other teams considered by the committee for one of the NY6 slots.

The BCS didn't find it necessary or useful to rank teams below #15, IIRC.

I repeat. The only reasons for the current process are to provide fodder for talking heads, and generate controversy.

It was extremely instructive.
2014 G5 rankings
Poll 1
23 ECU 6-1 (Marshall undefeated and unranked)
Poll 2
None
Poll 3
None
Poll 4
None
Poll 5
23 Boise St 9-2
24 Marshall 11-0

At this point we now know that 9-3 AAC champion Memphis is likely out barring help. CUSA East leader Marshall will likely need to win out. CUSA West leader La.Tech is out. MAC East leader Bowling Green is out, MAC West leader NIU at 9-2 needs help. MWC West leader Fresno is out, Mountain leader Boise is probably good by winning out. Sun Belt champ is out as ineligible.

No you can't change your schedule but you can see what the committee thinks and understand what you have to do to have a chance.
NIU went to the MAC title game and posted a 51-17 win but Boise winning out precluded their shot. Marshall losing followed by a close title game means if Boise had lost we could have had a unranked G5 in access.
