Junior Safety Picks off Three Passes in Homecoming Win
Nov. 8, 2004
HOUSTON - Only two days after helping lead the University of Houston football team to a Homecoming win, junior safety Will Gulley was honored Monday as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Gulley tied a C-USA single game record with three interceptions in the Cougars' 34-24 win over East Carolina on Saturday at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
He also added seven tackles, including six solo stops, to help the Cougars break a four-game losing streak in Homecoming contests and win their second straight game this season.
The Newton, Texas, native became the first player since Johnny Jackson in 1987 to pick off three opposing passes in a game. His total tied as the third-highest in UH single-game history.
Gulley and his Cougar teammates return to action at 3 p.m., Saturday as they meet C-USA rival UAB at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. Saturday's game will be broadcast on Star 790, KBME-AM with the pregame show beginning 45 minutes prior to kickoff. Tom Franklin and Tony Fitzpatrick will call all the action from the booth with Chuck Brown serving as the sideline reporter.
