America East, A-10 and CAA consolidate?
Is there a plausible way for those 3 to merge down into 2? Perhaps north and south? (North=NY state and New England)

No. You're talking 33 schools total (I think) and the A-10 (correctly) considers itself a definite step up in terms of competition and facilities. There'd be little appetite for something like that.

Thanks Bogg! That's exactly what I suspected. My goal was the Comm Ave rivalry in the same conference, and if they weren't already, the other Philly schools together.

Wonder if the America East and the CAA could be consolidated?

Why would two conferences, each of which now has an autobid to the NCAAT, give up one of those bids by consolidating? All you are doing is cutting your per school revenue from the tournament in half.

THIS

But I'll tell you what, I'd be interested in trading Fordham for JMU.

Fordham plays in the smallest gym in the league, JMU has a legitimate arena.
JMU would join Richmond and URI in teams that play A10 basketball and CAA football.

Does JMU basketball really do anything for the A10? What's the point?

No not particularly, but neither does Fordham. 03-lmfao

These conferences are already pretty compact. There's no gain from consolidation.

The other problem is that you assume that schools recruiting, student, and alumni bases correspond tightly with their geographic location. For GW, UR, and Davidson...they look to the NYC metro. GW has more students from Massachusetts than from DC (undergrads).

The A-10, America East, and the CAA have zero problems with geography. Although, St Louis is a bit of an outlier, but the A-10 can afford it. Not a problem.

They're having a good year this year, but I'd add Duquesne to that list. If the A-10 dropped down to 12 by ditching Duquesne and Fordham, I'd be good with that.

Tom: would SLU fit in CUSA or the BE?

Would Northeastern or BU jump to join their neighbor?

I agree with dropping Fordham. But I'd replace them with Sienna (not JMU).

Sienna plays at a big (15k) arena, and drew 5,900 fans per game last year (A-10 average is 4,700).

JMU is not a candidate for the Atlantic 10. They have a 'football problem' in that they're supposedly open to FBS. We're not interested in importing football related instability into our conference.

The potential candidates are, IF there's an opening (there isn't one now).... Siena, Boston Univ., Hofstra, Manhattan, Northeastern, etc.

Why on Earth would SLU join CUSA? Their basketball sucks. Any decision that they make will be geared towards football. SLU's travel expenses would likely be higher, not lower in CUSA. SLU's historical ties are East and North, not South and West.

SLU would very much like to gain admission to the Big East. So would every other team in the Atlantic 10.

When Valpo became available, the A-10 signaled to both SLU and Dayton that "we're not expanding to fill around you" and "yes you can stay, but we are an Eastern conference". The league is aware that they're a treat to leave. And the league has made the calculation that

1) If the Big East or AAC comes calling for SLU or Dayton, that they'll leave and there's nothing the A-10 can do to stop that

2) Adding marginal teams to satisfy the desires of outliers that are defection threats isn't the best policy.

Honestly, I don't think the A-10 really needs to be in the business of adding anyone near-term, even if they lose a program or two. There's no need for that conference to be at 14 members.

Thanks for reminding me CUSA isn't any more desirable a conference.

Setting aside the 4,000,000,000 reasons this is a non-starter, your initial premise is bunk because Boston University is in none of the America East, A-10 or CAA.

I had thought they were in America East. Why is them in the same conference a non-starter?

*clears throat* We already have one FBS member.

School Capacity Attendance Y/N
Sienna 15,229 6,269 Yeah, good numbers but arena probably too big for school that size (5x enrollment)
BU 1800/7200 700 Right now? Nah, but win in that arena and we'll talk
Hofstra 5,142 1,684 They legit have worse attendance than Fordham, but maybe down the road?
NE 6,000 1,786 No, would rather BU: higher enrollment, better school, bigger facilities, much higher endowment
JMU 6,426 3,001 Not right now, but JMU has shown athletics commitment and I'd like another public school in A10
