The best thing they did to UAB football was to kill it for a couple years. The area has really gotten behind them. Good for them. This also has a ways to go. We'll see when they need to pony up the bucks.

Bottom line is absolutely critical to have comparable facilities to our peers. If we don't, we won't be able to recruit competitively and put a winning program on the field. A losing team won't be embraced in Hampton Roads very long by any folks other than the die hards and a half full 20,000 seat place would be a disaster. I'm more and more concerned our new stadium will be one of the worst in CUSA the day it opens. ODU has to find a way to get a top quality stadium built in phase one. I truly believe the future success (and financial stability) of the program depends on investment in this stadium.

Take this mans shoe laces and belt! Let's just wait and see what the finished product actually looks like. I seriously doubt it'll be half as bad as some suggest. May be in for a pleasant surprise.

Give us the suites, club level and whatever else it takes to make phase 2 get here quicker.

Thats what Im hoping too. Just not seeing any indication that will be the case. Each report gets less and less impressive, not more. Id feel a lot better if they were actively trying to raise additional money specifically to be used in phase one. Believe me, I'll be thrilled if we get something similar to what FAU, North Texas, Tx State, UCF or even JMU has now.

If on-campus weren't important, the dream scenario would be a joint venture with an ownership group to put a 30,000-seat football/MLS stadium with all the bells and whistles somewhere easily accessible. Obviously that won't be happening.

I do wonder how many options ODU would have if it was OK with off-campus, and how much better and/or cheaper they'd be compared to shoehorning a stadium rebuild in the current location.

For 12 to 15 million you can get 6,000 seats similar to Virginia Beach Sportsplex. 07-coffee3

I am interested in know how much it is costing us to tear down and retrofit the Foreman site for a new stadium. It seems much nicer stadiums have been built recently for not much more money than we are going to spend. I imagine old Foreman plays into that somewhat, just wonder how much.

I would be OK with scheduling our home games opposite of Norfolk State so that we could use their stadium while we built one, as long as we build it right.

In most instances I'm steadfastly against off campus. I've seen some programs that have done it and interest just struggles. I know students aren't a huge percentage of our football attendance, but I wonder if they would just stop showing up completely if it was off campus.

Perhaps if we would have commited to a downtown stadium like I suggested numerous times. What benefit would the city gain by building it on campus?

Norfolk benefits tremendously from ODUs growth and success. If it is good for ODU its good for Norfolk and vice versa. The Navy, ODU and Norfolk Southern are probably the three most important things in the entire city. Norfolk should throw in 10 million and use it for high school playoff games and other civic type events. They don't mind paying for things downtown. It would generate significant revenue over time in tax revenue from hotels, meals etc from visiting teams, ticket sales, traveling fans etc.

The Port is toward the top of the list.

Yes, that was an oversight. But, also, my understanding is that Norfolk gets nothing from the port directly. All that goes straight to Richmond to be distributed to the western localities and NOVA. Of course, Norfolk gets no revenue directly from ODU either, so the benefits to the area are similar.

I don't understand your second and third sentence. What do you mean?

That as a non-profit ODU isn't paying taxes back to the city, neither is the Navy and the Port. The Port makes a lot of money, but Norfolk gets none of it, the state keeps it to redistribute as they see fit. At least thats what a Norfolk politician told me. "Norfolk is the golden goose that lays lots of eggs for the western parts of the state."

ODU, the Navy and the Port are huge economic benefits for the city though, because hopefully a sizable portion of people working there live in the city. They shop in the city, eat in the city etc and contribute to the economy that way. There are also private business that are started to support those entities. Additionally, a more academically robust ODU would draw businesses and research to the region as they would be attracted to hiring our grads and partnering with our researchers and labs. Its no coincidence the research triangle is in between UNC, Duke and NC State for example.
