If this wall just stops 40% of those entering the U.S. and then gets caught how long would it be before it was saving the U.S. money?

It cost the Feds $80 a day to house a federal prisoner. So lets say a million gets in each year and now this wall stops 400,000, I guess you would need to find out how many get caught each year once they enter this country.

I read a figure where 27,505 (36%) of illegals were in federal prison in 2014 and I'm sure it's way more than that that are in county jails waiting to be deported. The Feds pay for that stay. So if it just stopped 40,000 a year that would be over a billion dollars saved if each of those were in prison for 1 year.

That does not take into account the cost to those that a crime was committed on. Yes, 10 billion is a lot of money...but money that also saves in other area that the government is spending huge dollars in
Walls can't vote. That is what this is really about, not money. Hell our govt pisses away money of dumber stuff daily.

XACLY!

many of us are saying the same thing......

spend it where it's meaningful....and do it right instead of pissing in a gale.....

If money were no object we'd just build a canal to connect the Pacific to the Gulf. THAT would be a border project.

I'm not against increased border security but a wall? Seriously?

Why would we want to spend billions on a wall when we could spend billions on more border patrol agents.

Wouldn't that make more sense?

How about both, with some high tech stuff thrown in.

Because a wall is a big waste of money. If you build a wall with no additional security, the "illegals" will simply build a ladder that's one foot higher.

We can accomplish the same thing by simply hiring more agents.

How about we charge the wall with about 100 KV of electricity. That way when the "illegals" go to climb the ladder they get a shocking experience.

Was reading about a big raid on 7/11 and a big push to start criminally charging executives and companies that are knowingly hiring illegals. I couldn’t support that more fully. Eliminate the job opportunities and punish those that want to exploit illegals.

Just more amateur hour from the child-in-chief.

Wow, Tom.... Your obsession is amazing. If he had said 'no way', you would have blasted him. He says 'yes' and you still blast him.

It's amateur hour in your mind because he did exactly what someone you would have supported has done and pissed off some conservatives? I think 'ultra' conservatives on immigration NEED to be a little pissed off... and SO DO YOU. If they weren't, I feel confident you'd be among the first on here to complain about how far right he is.

Trump isn't an ultra-con. Never has been. He quite publicly before the election supports single-payer.

I'm not saying he's right or anything else here... I'm just wondering what he could POSSIBLY have done to appease you here... and if the answer is 'nothing', then I really don't see what your point is in posting.

Wouldn't that make more sense?

I suspect that construction projects that need maintenance as well as staffing are more multiplicative than 'service' jobs... so while it is certainly possible, I don't think so. As others have said, I think it's a combination of things. Walls are appropriate (and safer) in some places... and people are appropriate in others.

(01-10-2018 01:21 PM)Redwingtom Wrote:  Question for the conservatives...do you honestly think we have no fences or walls along any point of our southern border? I'm seriously confused by the continual comments as if nothing of the sort currently exists.

I don't think anyone thinks that there are no fences or walls anywhere... in fact there are memes, even in this thread showing the barriers and describing them as inadequate... but in existence. This seems just like one of those 'argue in the absurd' assignments in order to dismiss the entire opinion as absurd. I'm sure they exist, like the woman who thinks that 'deer crossing' signs on highways encourage the deer to cross there.... or liberals who think that electric cars don't need or use fossil fuels in their use or creation.... but it's a minute portion of the public.

The fact is that there are significant portions of our border with Mexico that are quite easily traversed. Make the drive from say Fort Stockton to San Diego on 10/8 (which I just did twice) and you'll see them. I've also personally seen large portions of the Texas south border that are easily traversed.

But we already have that in place in the form of a fence. Why does it have to ba a wall?

What you don't want Mexicans looking at us through the fence?
