I have no clue who my own congressman is today. I've had about 8 of them in 17 years, 3 in the same district due to 2 deaths and the rest all due to redistricting. Haven't had one actually representing our local interests since Herb Bateman died in 2000. The rest have been from other regions, with the exception of Bobby Scott, who is a local race hustler (and recently accused of sexual assault) that has been in the swamp since before electricity. The courts a couple of years ago thought it would be cute to stick a few conservative middle class neighborhoods in his gerrymandered district that will never flip and I think that is who is representing my interests now, though there are yard signs from other districts in the neighborhood now as well.

It doesn't matter. The current map is unconstitutional. I like where the court has gotten aggressive with the GOP, who seeks to frustrate the courts by stalling. Lets see if they have enough cajones to stick to their ruling.

Correct that it doesn't matter.

If gerrymandering is wrong, it's wrong.

To change it there must be a law put in place defining the districts -- period. No change by either party.

If population moves from one district to another, so be it. Leave it alone and never change it.

RE: NC Map Comparison
An interesting debate question, is political gerrymandering to favor one party over another unconstitutional?

I am a big proponent that it is unhealthy for the system, districts should be based on geography and current county lines as much as possible, but is it unconstitutional?

It's true that it doesn't matter which is worse, but when both parties do it and whine about the other party, they look like idiots.

What part of the constitution would it violate? IMO, the districts should be set in stone apolitically and be done with it.

I had the same thing in the 90s in Texas. The Democrats 1990 gerrymander kept getting redrawn and thrown out again. We didn't totally get rid of it until 2002 when the Republicans redistricted lines the court had drawn in 2000 which only minimally changed the 1990 lines (split government-couldn't agree on lines so the court correctly did a minimal change).

I don't think it is. But with computers, it gets pretty extreme. I think there should be some rules about minimal splitting of jurisdictions (counties, cities). If those are enforced (Texas has had them but they were ignored), it minimizes the extremes. There may be disproportionate results, but it will only be because people segregated themselves by party. Perhaps you could have some geographical constraints so you didn't have long, windy districts gathering counties across a state, although that would be difficult to write.

In these days, I just don't believe there is anything such as a non-partisan commission. The parties will put people on determined to advantage their party.

Clearly the one produced by the Republicans is worse because they are venal. And we all know that Democrats are as pure as the wind-driven snow.

Wasn't that old 12th district the one that they used to say, "You can drive down I-85, and if you open your car door you are in a different congressional district"?

Why does one have to be worse than the other?

Why can't we just agree that it should never be done.

I guess someone wants to justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior.

Quite The opposite there Mr teacher. If the 90's - 2010 gerrymandering was legally ok why is the current GOP gerrymander not?
