Both of those schools kept their coaching cores for the duration. Stability sure as hell helps.

Gary Patterson has been at TCU since 1998 and has been HC since 2000. Kyle Whitingham has been at Utah since 1994 and has been HC since 2005.

Other than Navy which is a different beast, coaching staffs in this conference turn into pumpkins and are either fired or take another job in 3-4 years (or earlier).

This is a really good point. TCU keeping an elite coach like Gary Patterson in place for as long as they have has been a godsend to that program. I think there is a reasonable case to be made that Patterson is as good as any coach in college football. TCU isn't OSU or Bama...it's a school that had been in the WAC, CUSA and the Mountain West in the last 2 decades. They've moved all around and he's won. He's competing for Big 12 titles at a program that was a nothing of college football and not even in a big time conference. Boise State's stability and rise to consistent prominence had a ton to do with keeping Peterson for so long.

Yeah...the guy who replaced Urban was already on the staff for nearly a decade and has been the HC since Urbie lef and during the bid process and transition to the P12. They had continuity and didn't look like a 3 year layover when the P12 expanded.

Any P5 that is looking to expand for any reason outside of desperation is going to look very hard at what happens to that potential partner program if they bring them in and the coach moves on.

Pump the breaks turbo. Maybe if UCF had played a full schedule and beat GaTech...

Damn natural disaster

a GaTech win wouldn't have changed anything IMO. Our SOS would have gotten a little better, but the CFP would have used the same excuse.

I think you have a good chance. My best is that the Big 12 adds UCF and USF at some point.

But, USF has a huge attendance problem... Winning for two seasons did NOT bring back the fans. Some of us are scratching our heads about this... but its up to the administration to fix it. I am not convinced an OCS is the solution. May bring in a few more students...

If I was the B12, I'd have to decide if UCF along got me enough of the Florida market, or if there was benefit to grabbing both. Frankly, it's a tough call... but probably a moot point. Won't be any expansion for awhile.

In the meantime... we'll have to see what, if anything, USF can do to grow it's fanbase back to 2007 levels.

South Florida has no long built in tradition. The players are around the same age as the program. And it's a pro football market, albeit a weak one. Unless Miami, FSU, Florida, Georgia and Alabama are coming in every year, it puts a damper on things.

See! We are making progress. At this rate it will only take another 19 years to have an AAC team ranked 5th with an undefeated season. Or 95 years to be ranked #1 if undefeated. So whats there to complain about?

ECU brings nothing to the ACC's Bottomline....they already have 4 schools in NC.

UCF would have a stronger case but doubtful FSU and Miami along with the ACC schools that mine FL for recruits would want to give UCF equal recruiting status.

Utah was added, at least in part, as a response to their Senator and their state AG going after the BCS for anti-trust.

I think UCF gets there ultimately but the CFP requires a whole new strategy than just winning and/or legal maneuvering. I think DW is on to something with the swagger / national champion talk -- UCF just has to back it up in successive years. No more up / down nonsense.

Not a good look for UCF according to Gary Patterson yesterday on ESPN radio.

BTW UCF is not anywhere close to the success that Boise State has had over the last decade plus

Boise State has had higher rankings, more victories, more bowls, no losing seasons, much better perception.

Boise won't ever get into a P5 ever because of location and academics.

There's a ton of other G5 schools with a lot more to offer a P5 conference.

And a poorer media market. I think another few successful seasons by UCF and it'll be even because of the east coast bias.

Haven’t read through the entire post yet, but when TCU was added, the B12 had just lost Nebraska, Colorado, and Missouri. They were desperate to get to 10 teams. Fortune smiled and TCU was there, with a great team and great location.

RE: Can UCF do what TCU and Utah did?
Of all the teams, TCU is probably the last strategy UCF should follow. It's not repeatable / applicable for any school other than maybe Houston. Texas politics are texas politics.

*IF* another school ever gets called up, it'll be whatever the trendy hot name is. It's all about brands and money, not feelings. Plus, after the b12 dragged a bunch of presidents out and embarrassed them through a mock-expansion exercise, I'm pretty sure there's not a lot of love going in any direction anymore.

I'd rather call attention to the corruption and send this whole thing closer to an anti-trust case.

Doesn’t get it ^^^^^^! Likes bending over and grabbing ankles. Has the mindset of the beaten puppy (UC fan). Somebody should tell Coach Patterson respectfully that our AD is not meeting the B12 commissioner in late night bar rendezvous and giving him multiple tuggys! I didn’t even get to add my 3...2...1 till Shere Kahn joins for his approval and daily circle jerk with is buddy rath..
