Blazer Almanac - January 9
January 9

Today is the day that should be celebrated as a holiday for UAB football fans. This is the day that UAB football was saved. This event saved UAB football even before the Board of Trustees and Ray Watts abolished the sport in December 2014. On this day in 2014, Garrick McGee resigned as UAB football coach to become Offensive Coordinator at Louisville. This opened the way for the hire of Bill Clark. And the rest is history.

The Games
UAB is 6-3 in games played on this date.

1982 - UAB defeated South Alabama 78-59. The quote of the day comes from Coach Gene Bartow. Speaking about the 1981-82 team that would ultimately advance to the Elite Eight. "This team is hard to coach. When you have six seniors with a dream, it's tough."

1986 - #14 ranked UAB beat VCU 72-70 in overtime. The Blazers scored the first seven points in overtime, but tried to give it away, missing three front ends of one and ones in the final 37 seconds. VCU was unable to take advantage of UAB's generosity.

1988 - UAB was the preseason favorite to win the 1987-88 Sun Belt season, but in this conference opener at Western Kentucky, they lost 53-50. The Blazers were without star Michael Charles who had stayed home due to the death of his mother. UAB went over five minutes in the second half without scoring and the Hilltoppers came from behind to win. This UAB team would be a disappointment. Picked to win the conference, they finished fifth and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in eight years.

1993 - The Blazers opened Great Midwest conference play at home verses Marquette. This game marked the debut of a new Blazer mascot. Beauregard T. Rooster had been retired the previous season, and UAB had been without a mascot for the first eight home games. Debuting was "Blazer Warrior, nicknamed Blaze". UAB was coming off a four game road swing in which they had gone 0-4. The team was excited to be back at Bartow Arena where they were undefeated that season. Robert Shannon had told the Post Herald that Marquette was in trouble. Never a smart move. Apparently Marquette coach Kevin O'Neill used the Post Herald headline and quote from Shannon as motivation. The article was found in the visiting locker room pinned on the dry erase board after the game along with a burned "Bartow's Bleacher Creature" t-shirt. The motivation worked because Marquette handed UAB its fifth straight loss 80-66. The loss marked the longest losing streak in UAB history to that point.

1994 - The 10-1 Blazers traveled to Cincinnati to take on the #17 ranked Bearcats, who had a 25 game home winning streak. Coach Bartow hoped a win would put UABin the top25. UAB had the fifth best scoring defense in the country, giving up only 58.2 points a game. Led by Robert Shannon's 24 points, UAB upset Cincinnati 67-65 and found themselves ranked #22 in the next AP poll.

1999 - UAB hosted Houston and their new head coach, NBA veteran Clyde Drexler. UAB destroyed the Cougars 116-78, setting the record for most points ever scored in a conference game. It was also the record for most points scored in a CUSA game, a record that held until 2002.

2008 - UAB traveled to Tulane and played a very close game against the Green Wave. The game had 13 ties and 15 lead changes. The game came down to a 57-57 tie, and Reggie Huffman put UAB up with a short jumper. Tulane answered with a three pointer and UAB was down by two with 23 seconds to go. UAB turned the ball over on the next possession and Tulane hit 1 of 2 free throws with just a few seconds left. Ed Berrios for UAB took a desperation three with 1.6 seconds left and missed. However he was inexplicably fouled and awarded three free throws. Berrios hit all three shots and UAB won 62-61.

2010 - UAB played at Tulane again two years later and won 58-49.

2013 - UAB lost at Central Florida 64-48. The Blazers were ice cold, shooting 20 of 77 from the field, 26%. Worst yet, they went 0 for 26 from three point range, making the first time in 538 games that UAB had not scored a three pointer.

2016 - William Lee scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as UAB defeated UTEP 87-80.

Blazer Birthdays
Born today in 1958 was Stan Scales, one of the original Blazers. Scales was on UAB's first two teams, a Chicago native who was a Junior college transfer to UAB. He is remembered mainly as the player who scored UAB's first basketball points in the inaugural game against Nebraska. In his UAB career, he played in 54 games and averaged 4 points a game.

Happy 60th birthday. Hard to believe we have former players in their 60’s now.

If I had to guess I would say it has happened another time or two.

Probably in the early days. when it first was instituted. Bartow didn't like it until Kennedy came along. 538 games takes you back to the mid 90s though

I was at a game where Pete Maravich scored 69 points before the 3 point shot or dunking were legal. LSU still lost.
