Almost...as usual Houston athletics was one game away, this time losing to Texas. Win that game and UH possibly wins it all. The polls were funny like that back then too, there's was no guarantee of a national championship, even at 12-0.

Houston almost won 5 national championships in football and basketball but fell one game short.

Your AD should see if any of the NCAA declared mathematical polls had them #1. Then you can claim a NC and the NCAA will document it. All the cool kids are doing it.
