Of course, in those same 3 games he has 17 assists and 3 TOs. Unfortunately, ODU's offense is largely dependent on Caver and Stith creating shots to open spaces for the other players.

Post-game, Twardzik mentioned that WKU thought that the Hollingsworth match-up vs Caver would be favorable for WKU. Hollingsworth held CUSA-leading scorer Elmore to 5-15 FGs last Saturday.
Mini slump indeed , but not unexpected. Caver is a not a great shooter. He is a sub 40% career shooter. Rarely does he break the 40% mark shooting. The WKU game was very normal for him.

Then keep his dad as an assistant. You can't create a mess with an interim coach who can't recruit to protect one player.

Jones's entire strategy is beyond stupid, wearing this team out now serves zero purpose and not playing huett and green (our supposed saviors according to the same "fans" who overhype every single recruiting class) is actually hurting the team's prospects not just this year but long term as well. There is zero excuse for this stupidity.

We are not making the NCAA tourney with a 6 man rotation and we aren't making it next year with what we are bringing back.

Draw the freaking line already, we lose every important game we play under jones, he is who he is.........a coach who's best years are behind him who did nothing at American to earn this job and has done nothing in 5 years to keep it.

Clean house, wood, jeff, everyone and bring in a YOUNG hire who can inject some life into this moribund program. Do the right thing Broderick, odu deserves better than wood and jeff!
I think JJ is actually feeling heat this year. Three things have happened that either don't make sense or are out of crater for him tat lead me to that conclusion.

1. The short bench makes no sense for the reasons you stated above, unless JJ is trying to rack up a bunch of wins so even without making the tournament he and Wood can say he won 23 games, so it's ridiculous to think about making a change. The schedule also is set up for that.

2. JJ playing a faster pace? Change is definitely out of character for him.

3. Making an effort to get fans to come out to games. Can't remember a time in his 5 years when he has led a push to get fans out and engaged.

Looks to me like there is a sense of urgency this year that we haven't seen thus far.

absolutely, attendance is as low as it has been since 13-14, coming off that 2 win season. between jeff jones, conference usa, and the team jeff has put on to the court, it shouldn't be a great mystery to anyone as to why we're in a pattern of perpetual mediocrity, losing nearly every meaningful in state contest, falling further and further by the wayside in our own state... i could go on all day honestly

Conference USA doesn't seem to hurt MTSU, WKU, and even UAB to some extent.

Being in CUSA doesn't explain perpetual losses to W&M and Marshall (I remember, not so long ago, when a loss to either was considered an embarrassment.)

We can't even blame Blaine Taylor and his holdovers. They are all gone. This is Jeff Jones's team.

This is what happens when you can't land any recruits for your first 3 years. Too little too late?

I agree with you, conference usa alone is not enough to hurt us... all of those things that i listed put together are enough to hurt us

I agree he must be feeling the hot seat, otherwise he would have redshirted the players who don't play. Still makes no sense they don't at least get a handful or minutes, or be redshirted.

Can't even beat Stansbury on home court. Sad."

How did I do

Sometimes it sucks being right all the time lol.

Valentine, who averaged 21.8 points per game for his career and 9.4 rebounds per game, shot .514 from the floor and .730 from the line. He was named Associated Press honorable mention All-American in 1979 and 1980. He led Old Dominion in scoring all four seasons he played, and held five school records.

He scored in double figures every game he ever played in. And there was no three point shot either.

Thanks for the specifics on Valentine that you provided there Mac. It is telling that today we gush all over a player at ODU when he has a great game where he scored 22 points or got 10 rebounds. To think that Ronnie basically did that every night is pretty incredible.

I was fortunate enough to see one of his games when he was playing for Norfolk Catholic before anyone knew he would end up at ODU and was extremely impressed by what I saw. I hadn't even gone there to see him as I was there to support the other team. Ronnie almost scored enough to beat them single handedly. To get back to my original point in bringing him up though, he did have a very flat line drive shot, but was like a sharpshooter with his mostly midrange game.

RE: MBB: WKU Game - Thursday
There was a thread about Valentine in March 2016. Had some really good info there. This is something I posted back then:

In the 1973-74 basketball season, Booker T Washington came to Norfolk Catholic to play. Catholic had a really good team led by senior John Newsome who was recruited by Lefty and played at Maryland for a couple years.

BTW had a skinny, 6-7 sophomore named Ronnie Valentine, who I'd never heard of before that night. One of the best high school games I ever saw. Newsome scored 35 in the win, but Valentine had 34 and game went back and forth until very end. It was an amazing display. Guy could shoot. Made contested shots from everywhere. He was really good from the baseline. His game left quite an impression.

As I recall some time not too much later Ronnie transferred to Catholic and ultimately was part of our graduating class. He was a nice guy. I had two years watching him in practices and every game. I was already an ODU fan then so it was awesome when he choose the Monarchs. It was fun seeing him continue getting better and having the career he had at ODU.

One of the best shooters/scorers ever.

I attended middle school with Newsome, knew him a bit, remember seeing him play for MD on TV, don't think he played much

Was in BJ's in Norfolk a couple weeks ago. My daughter said wow that guy is tall. Looked over and it was John Newsome. I went over and talked to him for a minute. As I recall at Maryland he played a few minutes a game as a freshman then played a little more as a sophomore, but didn't make it in school and was gone before that year ended.
