The Games
UAB is 8-4 in games played on this date.

1980 - UAB and VCU meet for the first time ever. Entering the game, both teams were undefeated in Sun Belt play. Blazers won at home 82-71 behind Keith McCord's 22 points.

1984 - UAB improved to 14-2 with a home win over Western Kentucky 71-56

1989 - UAB lost at Old Dominion 101-89 in the conference opener. Chris Gatling for Old Dominion had 32 points and 12 rebounds. Andy Kennedy who was the leading scorer in the Sun Belt had 15 points.

1991 - The Blazers were playing its third game in five days, in Charlotte, back in abirmingham and now in Richmond verses VCU. UAB shot only 37%. Jack Kramer and Andy Kennedy combined for 6 of 27. Still they had a shot to win at the end, but Kramer's 30 foot shot was just short and UAB lost 66-64.

1992 - UAB hosted DePaul, the Preseason Great Midwest favorite to win the conference. Blazers won 75-69, led by Elbert Rogers' 25 points.

1995 - In the first game since losing Carlos Williams for the season, UAB opened Great Midwest conference action. Charged with replacing Williams' 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds was De'Shanti Foreman starting in his place. The first game was at Saint Louis who destroyed the Blazers 81-56.

1998 - UAB defeated #20 Marquette at Marquette 65-52. Marquette was undefeated 10-0 heading into the game. Cedric Dixon hit 5 three pointers in the second half, scoring 21 in the game.

2001 - LeAndrew Bass had 13 assists as UAB defeated Tulane 98-76.

2004 - UAB opened the conference season at East Carolina. UAB led the entire game, but the Pirates made it close at the end. With 1:41 left and the game tied, Squeaky Johnson in his third career start, stole the ball and Donell Taylor found Mo Finley for a driving layup that put UAB up to stay. Squeaky Johnson had 12 points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals with no turnovers in the 71-68 win.

2012 - It was appropriate that in the first game after the passing of Coach Gene Bartow that UAB's first game was hosting Memphis in the Gene Bartow Classic. And a classic it was. The game had 16 ties and 10 lead changes and no one led by more than seven points. With 1:55 left, Memphis's Will Barton put the Tigers up by seven. Two free throw by Quincy Taylor and a three by Jordan Swing brought UAB within three with just over a minute left. Swing's game tying shot was blocked out of bounds with 1.2 seconds left, Memphis ball. But UAB had one more chance because on the inbound, Ovie Soko stole the ball with .6 seconds left. However, UAB was unable to get a shot off, and Memphis won 62-59.

2016 - UAB defeated Texas San Antonio 104-82.

2017 - UAB defeated Rice in overtime 88-81 at Rice. It appeared UAB had the game winner when Denzel Watts hit a three pointer, giving UAB a 3 point lead with 2.5 seconds to go. However, with one second left, Tosin Mehinti fouled a Rice player on an attempted three. Rice hit all three free throws to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, UAB held Rice without a field goal for the first 4:50. UAB stole the ball on three straight possessions and won the game 88-81.
