If they want in they can almost assuredly snag any mix of AAC, MWC, CUSA, and Sun Belt for a bargain price.

Starting in October, NBCSN jumps into the NHL with both feet generally with a Tuesday and Wednesday night line-up and no NHL on Thursdays or Fridays (except opening week when they normally do a doubleheader the first Thursday).

They could easily do a Thursday and Friday weeknight telecast and most Saturdays have at least two windows available for football after soccer, sometimes three. They could offload some content to NBC Sports Regionals, the only rub being that they are really limited in footprint. NBC Sports Bay Area and NBCS California isn't going to care about anything but some MWC content. NBCS Northwest and Chicago none of what is coming up for bid is useful for anything but filler. NBCS Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and SportsNet NY aren't going to be crazy for anything that would be in south and southwest.

They actually have been buying some mid-range sports (I guess that's how one would classify them) properties of late. MLS and US Premier rights would fall into that category. Not AAC cheap (20 million), but not Big10 priced (350 million) either.

In Olympic sports they play in a division with Wich St, Tulsa, SMU, & Houston, with very little play against the 8 other members. If continuity rules ever allow you eventually spin the western group off and gain a 2nd autobid all the better.

You get a large league with content in all 4 time zones. You get near P5 ratings at a fraction of the cost. The league effectively becomes a P6 because it's doubtful that the MAC, SBC, C-USA, and a depleted MWC could ever challenge them.

This is a lot easier to achieve and yields a lot more per school than trying to get 3 conferences and a contrary independent all in agreement.

Yeah but how do you get the "contrary independent" to join the AAC? They make double the media dollars that the AAC schools averaged and still get to play their historic MWC rivals. BYU is Indy and still played 6 MWC schools last year. That's getting your cake and eating it too.

Do you think ESPN is going to continue the BYU deal as much of a flop as the football program has been? They were expecting a program that was going to be in the Top 25 regularly and a challenger for a CFP bowl. None of that seems realistic at this point.

BYU's storied fan support, 60k like a big time team has really fallen behind what national powers are drawing these days. One game this season only drew 46,500 fans. In the early 90's BYU was consistently 64-65k at a time when Alabama and ND were pulling in those numbers. Today they would be average for the PAC and not too far from the AAC range.

BYU/Boise could do a scheduling agreement with the AAC where they would help the TV package and bring up the bowl agreements some. Boise can try and lobby for a spot in the WCC (coveted 11th member for basketball).

Ehh. BYU had a bad year. They have fielded pretty decent teams for the most part. If I was the new UH AD I'd be trying to sign BYU to a long term home and home like Boise did (say 10 years). Make it a tradition---"The Battle of the Cougars". Set it for late in the season so it helps BYU's late season home game scheduling struggles. I think it would be a really good series--one both fan bases would enjoy.

They walked from the MLS deal the moment ESPN and Fox opened their wallet.

They really aren't doing much of anything in college sports outside the A10 and some Ivy League.

CBSSN has this exact lineup and it's not killing in ratings even with outstanding production.

True...but they basically replaced it with Premier, which actually costs more. I think they pay about 160 million a year for Premier. I suspect all 5 G5 leagues could be had for somewhere near that. Heck, you dont ever really need all of each. I feel certain you could buy a first or second tier rights package from each G5 for way under $160 million. I dont even know if NBC would have room for ALL the G5 inventory (I suspect they couldnt come close to showing it all). A package from each conference would be more than adequate.

And you know that how? To my knowledge---CBS-Sports Network ratings arent available.

That said, I suspect your actually right. The truth is--CBS Sports doesnt really "have" the lineup described. While they do have their pick of MW and CUSA games, the majority of the other G5 conference inventory in their cart is the stuff ESPN doesnt want and sells off to CBS-Sports. CBS-Sports also does not do an oon campus "Game Day" type Saturday show exclusively from G5 schools. Thats a big part of building the network Im describing that would really attract an under served largely ignored G5 audience. If I am CBS-Sports--Im so close to being able to pull this off with very little effort--I give it a shot. Create an "on location: traveling Saturday morning show catered to the key G5 games of the day. Its not that expensive. There isnt much to lose. 04-cheers

RE: Media idea: AAC, MWC, CUSA, BYU on NBC Sports
As mentioned, CBSSN is missing all of the MWC, AAC, and BYU content that goes to ESPN. Here are 16 AAC/MWC/BYU 2017 games with 500K to 1M or greater viewership that could have been on CBSSN or NBCSports, if they were all in:

Illinois-USF (1.36M on ESPN)
Virginia-Boise St. (1.324M on ESPN2)
Boise St.-New Mexico (1.053M on ESPN)
Boise St.-BYU (1.043M on ESPN)
Portland St.-BYU (939K on ESPN)
Temple-USF (992K on ESPN)
Memphis-UConn (769K on ESPN)
Navy-Temple (758K on ESPN)
Navy-Houston (699K on ESPN)
Temple Cincinnati (697K on ESPN2)
Memphis-Tulsa (683K on ESPN2)
Utah-BYU (668K on ESPN2)
Boise St.-Fresno (623K on ESPN)
Memphis-Houston (565K on ESPN)
Tulsa-USF (545K on ESPN)
BYU-UNLV (525K on ESPN2)

This doesn't include the games that were on ABC, that could have been broadcast on CBS or NBC:

USF-UCF (4.644M on ABC)
Texas Tech-Houston (3.85M on ABC)
AAC championship (3.385M on ABC)
UCLA-Memphis (3.238M on ABC)
Wisconsin-BYU (2.274M on ABC)

I've never seen CBSSN ratings numbers. I do know that CBSSN is in fewer homes than NBCSN. CBSSN might be more intriguing if they add CBSSN to CBS All Access or as a dirt cheap add on. When All Access was brewing there was a lot of speculation that CBSSN would be part of it and that didn't happen.

And that really surprised me. I figured that would be a big boost that would help a new OTT Streaming Network get off the ground strong....but nope...didnt happen.

Wonder if it was a rights issue since so much of their college sports is subbed from ESPN. All the AAC and MAC content is sub. MWC and bowls are direct purchase.

I would be fine with a late afternoon kick on Sunday if A-State wants to play along. Start moving toward evening and I'm not so happy since I have two hour drive home and work the next day.

I think it would be a blast for fans. Doubt Sunday games would fare well vs NFL since they generally don't on Thursday.

I'd just as soon see the Sunbelt go ESPN3 with a Saturday game of the week on another network. Drop the midweek games that are killing attendance and season ticket sales.

I'm fine with mid-week with this rider.

No team has to play more than 2 home midweek games in a season and no more than 3 home midweek games over a rolling two year period.

They aren't that bad but really one should be it, two just because sometimes that's how schedules fall.

It has been detrimental to both App and Georgia Southern. They've had 3 thursday night games in a row. This would be a 30,000+ person attended game in Boone if it were on a Saturday. With the Thursday attendance it gets barely more than 24k. ESPN could make up for that in my mind by moving the Thursday games to ESPN2 rather than ESPNU.

Five of the last six A-State / Louisiana games have been weeknight (Tuesday or Thursday) and the only Saturday game was Thanksgiving weekend so yeah I get it but there is value in weeknight games as long as it isn't gutting the home schedule. Only four Saturdays is tough, fewer than that and you are really killing your ticket sales.

The conferences that are really positioned to do mid-week games with minimal damage are the conferences with lots of city schools (as the vast bulk of their season ticket holders live in the same city as the school and dont require several hours to travel to the stadium). CUSA and the AAC could handle more of that kind of game than a conference like the Sunbelt. If they have the city schools handle the bulk of the mid-week games, the damage to attendance could be minimized.

But the city schools of CUSA aren't the schools with the best attendance to begin with.

Thats probably true--but its not the point I was trying to make. Im just saying the attendance delta between a weeknight kickoff and a weekend kickoff would be less at a city school than at a school like S Miss where people have to travel to the game from other area towns. Im not guaranteeing full stadiums--in fact, you'll see a drop in attendance even in the city schools. Im just saying the drop would be less at a city school than a more rural school. The point being, a conference like CUSA can minimize the adverse attendance affect by giving most of the weeknight games to city schools.
