I would imagine he is going to spend the summer at ODU working on his frame and his game. The kid can definitely be special. Love a guy that can come into a game cold and light up the scoreboard. Excited about his future.

RE: MHJ
Based only on the sparse p.t. that I've seen of him, MHJ reminds me a little bit of the Bugs Bunny character -- the "Tasmanian Devil". If you only are paying partial attention, out of the corner of your eye, he often appears to be out of position and out of control. But if you watch him closely, he is mostly always where he needs to be -- or at least he'll get in position in time to make a play. MHJ's engine simply runs at a higher r.p.m. than that of other players.

I don't know, because I don't attend practices and don't have any inside sources, but I don't buy the narrative that Coach Jones is so much of a control freak that he insists on squelching talent. Like Randy Haynes last year, MHJ will see the floor when his obvious talents warrant it.

Jones is old school. Freshmen simply will not get minutes unless absolutely necessary. I think that is all it is.

Yep Ever. And that's the way at many, many, many schools too. Love the kid but he's behind several other guards in the pecking order. His time is coming. That was the first CUSA road game hes ever been on. Patience is needed.

I think what everyone is frustrated about, is the fact that him or Godwin should have redshirted if they weren't going to get meaningful minutes.

Whose to say they won't get any minutes later. They are both seeing a lot of firsts. Heck Randy Haynes is just starting to get serious minutes . I know what you mean, would love to see him more but 11-3 says something to me. Would not be surprised to see Hueitt especially, get a few minutes during the second go round in CUSA.

I agree with that. 11-3 is the most important part of all of this.

RE: MHJ
For the life of me, I can't see why he can't get some of X. Green's playing time. Green has been invisible the past month. I'm especially frustrated that JJ couldn't get him on the floor for some meaningful minutes in the December blow-outs. That's mind-boggling.

If MHJ doesn't play more in the future than he has thus far, it's been a completely wasted year of eligibility. The only justification would be that Jones is trying to forestall him from transferring.

RE: MHJ
The only guard that is getting any playing time off the bench is Green - without counting the minute or two every other game that Pickney is getting.

It could all change in an instant if something caused either Caver, Haynes, BJ, or Green to be unable to play.

I listened to last night's game and didn't watch it so i'm not sure what type of zone Rice played. However, if there was ever a game where it would seem that MHJ's shooting skill could be utilized it would be in a game where the opposing team stays in a zone the entire game. If he doesn't see time in a game like that i'm not sure there will be another ideal opportunity barring blowouts.

RE: MHJ
I am in the camp of wishing we could see more of Hueitt ( and Godwin) on the floor. However realistically speaking I will be surprised to see much more of Hueitt ( or Godwin) on the floor this season barring an injury to a starter. Even with an injury like Green against Norfolk State we only saw one rotation for a couple of minutes for Hueitt in the first half.

Some are rationlizing that Hueitt will see more time as we get into the conference schedule and I hope they are correct but history does not point to that possibly happening.

Look at last season with Kah. He started the season benched because he didn't have a passport to go to the Bahamas. We saw some glimpses of what he could do at the end of some games and and we got excited that he could help. But that didn't happen.

JJ is going to sink or swim with his veterans and we do have a solid group of them. I think everyone is pulling for JJ to put Hueitt in the game for a couple of meaningful rotations a game ( if just for a couple of minutes) but he has had opportunities to in several games and chose not to. At the Charlotte game I heard fans from several different locations hollering for Jones to insert Hueitt but it didn't happen until about the 4 minute mark. Some could argue our record may not be 11-3 if Hueitt had played more but who knows. The W&M loss could have swung either way and the VCU loss has been chalked up to the team being gassed ( which a couple of players have admitted to). Maybe buying a few minutes for our starters could have avoided both those losses.

But be that as it may, the future looks bright with Hueitt and Godwin giving us some long range artist that we have badly needed. I'll continue to hope to see at least Hueitt inserted for some meaningful minutes in the future but again am not expecting it.

As someone in another post wrote, you can't have depth without playing depth. At this point we are not a deep team and that's what bothers me the most about this years addition. I have a lot of confidence in our first 7 players but it sure would be nice to know we could go 8 deep in each game. Guess I have said enough for one post. I'll end with a congrats to our Monarchs on a solid start to the season. Let's keep it going!!!!

RE: MHJ
Nice post JJ, and I am the one that posted the comment about needing to play depth in order to create depth. I was paraphrasing Blaine's thoughts there about depth. He was always trying to prepare his teams for the CAA Tournament and more than once stated that he felt like a team needed depth to make it to the end successfully.

Right now ODU has enough players. I'm just not sold on them having depth that they can count on in an emergency situation though since they have such a tight rotation. If it ever came down to that then someone will be thrown into the fire so to speak and we shall see how they handle it then. It will be like I have mentioned a time or two recently ... Necessity is the mother of invention.

RE: MHJ
I think it will come, hopefully this year. The thing very few freshman play for JJ. He has a system on defense and likes that players can go in and the defense is still there. He coaches as much on defense as offense. He also let's players play thru a slump, where they need to work it out. Knowing that he will still get the defense he expects. While he's hard on players, he does trust them to do their job.

To me, Godwin looked a bit like dear in headlights when he got in. He has a huge upside though. So I can understand him needing some time.

MHJ does not have that and doesn't look uncomfortable at all. But I wonder if JJ is just waiting to see something in practice we're not seeing. I have to defer to that expertise and hope he knows what he's doing.

MHJ and MG should have got more playing time against Rice but the starters decided to struggle with an inferior team.

To me there is a big difference between getting playing time and getting quality playing time. It's all well and good for these guys to get mop up time at the end of blowouts but i don't know how much they develop when it's our end of the bench against the opposing teams end of the bench. I would love to see them get at least one rotation per half with the primary group to develop a feel for a real game flow.

I don't think there are enough minutes at this time for both to find time. In hind sight it would have been great to have one of them pick up some time this year and the other red shirt. Oh well, that ship has sailed.

Mop up time is better than not playing at all, which is what happened against Rice

One thing we really don't know about the redshirt idea is what the players themselves thought of it. In the end it's the players decision. As far as we know Jones could have asked them to redshirt and they said no. It's happened before so I don't think it's totally fair to say Jones should have redshirted without knowing what the conversation was between player and coach.
