My Beefs with The Last Jedi -- Warning: Spoilers
In chronological order:

The ridiculous prank call Poe made to Hux, which was forced and went on far too long (like a bad SNL skit).

Leia floating like Mary Poppins back from deep space. Seriously?

The lack of backstory/background on Snoke. Just a Supreme Leader, with advanced Sith powers, from .... ?

Luke. I can see disgruntled early on, but he shoulda left with Rey. If he was gonna go out, it shoulda been with sabre in hand. They could of had an epic showdown with Snoke, Kylo, Rey and Luke and still arrived at the same body count.

No actual Jedi vs. Sith duel (only Episode movie w/out one).

Do not recall anyone saying "I've got a bad feeling about this" (only movie w/out it).

Did not like the whole Luke 'force-avatar' thing in the end, either. Palpatine and Snoke had to slum it and use hologram video conferencing...

What did you all think?

What if Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, or Saving Private Ryan did 6 sequels? At what point would they grow old and tiresome? Why then are we supposed to watch a predictable sequel and stay interested?

I think we have a herd mentality with some sequels. We’re told we all have to see it, our friends saw it, therefore I must see it. Doesn’t matter if it sucks, more important to follow the herd.

I agree with much of this. I'm hopeful that the next episode will help make more sense of this one.

Other than forcing Rose and Finn to share a moment, what purpose did the data slicer thread have? It wasted time, didn't move the story at all, and turned out to be pretty pointless.

I hate what they've done with Luke. Yes, I'm supremely biased considering he was my movie hero growing up, but I didn't like it at all.

Zero time spent on how Chewbacca is managing with the death of Han.

What happened to Snap Wexley?

In three lessons, Rey is a full-fledged Jedi now? Come on.

Snoke was so powerful that he could Force-connect minds from across the galaxy to interact in "real time"?!? Luke was so powerful he could project a real image of himself to interact with the environment in "real time", including conversation?!?
That would make these two the most powerful Force wielders ever in the history of the Star Wars Universe, extended or otherwise. Not even Revan, nor Palpatine, nor Yoda do those things. Oh, and what do you do with these two incredibly powerful Force-wielders? KILL THEM OFF. Christ.

What I liked:
-I liked the development of Poe.
-I liked the Holdo character (many hated it).
-I like what they are doing with Hux.
-I liked the new worlds introduced (visually stunning).
-I liked the Porgs (yes, I said it).
-I like what they are doing with Kylo

I saw two movies over Christmas.

Star Wars - Dud. Too forced and cliche. Time to let it go.

Darkest Hour - OUTSTANDING! If you saw Dunkirk over the summer, you definitely will want to see this. The best line in the movie: "You can't reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!"

They were bombs designed for space battle, so was willing to let that one slide.

Magnetic unguided bombs, clearly, to avoid countermeasures.

It gets better on a second showing, but clearly too forced. That's what you get with a relative rookie director.

The whole casino plot does figure in, it's how the bad guys figure out they are evacuating in cloaked shuttles (the slicer betrays them), so the movie can continue to the salt flats. But, there were far easier ways to make that happen. They probably had the general plot in mind and said, "oh shoot, how do we get Finn enough screen time?"

Spielberg is living off past glories. I watched the first three movies in the series, haven't watched one since. Special effects can only carry a weak story-line so far. Enough, Spielberg!! Enough.

I think we have a herd mentality with some sequels. We’re told we all have to see it, our friends saw it, therefore I must see it. Doesn’t matter if it sucks, more important to follow the herd.

Herd mentality may get folks in for one viewing, but the producers are hoping you see it several times. Star Wars is tired, real tired. Folks see it for the special effects, which are always good. But the story line has gotten weaker and weaker with each new movie. I just heard the latest sequel had already, in it's second week, dropped to second place in popularity-trailing the new 'Jumanji'. It's being rated 7.5 on a 10 scale by viewers. Not good.

Hollywood is desperate for new ideas. Two (2) current top-billing movies are remakes of 'Death Wish' and 'Predator'. Popular movies from the 1980's gussied up with modern computer graphics and special effects. From a writers standpoint, sad. Pathetic in fact.

And as for 'Mission Impossible 6', every time I see Tom Cruise I want to wrap a tire iron around his smirk. He's such a flaming a--hole, who can watch him in anything, anymore?

I stand corrected. But both of them have the same weakness-lack of a story line in their movies. I love good special effects, but as an accent not a main them. You enhance a movie with special effects, you carry it with story line. Neither of them understand that, it seems.

Man, you are 10 years old with that argument. Lucas has been out of the game for a while.

Spielberg is still the man. Where does he allow special effects to overtake the story? Schindlers List? Saving Private Ryan? Come on...

Spielberg produced and partly directed both those films, he didn't write either of them. In fact, his writing skills are rusty and hardly ever used anymore. He was never a strong writer.

In general, films today rely too much on special effects. Too much is spent on Computer Graphics and not on story line. Hollywood anchored the curve back in the 1930's and 1940's, today they are behind it-really behind it. In my opinion some of the highest paid actors in Hollywood today have mediocre talent, their movies are carried by special effects. The Directors cover-up the shortcoming in acting with lots of action scenes, humorous quips and special effects.

Let's go see 'Mission Impossible-16!'.
