Blazer Almanac -January 3 - RIP Coach Bartow
January 3
Today is the 6th anniversary of the death of our founder and beloved coach, Gene Bartow. Coach Bartow touched many lives of players and fans, and is greatly missed.

RIP Gene Bartow - August 18, 1930-January 3, 2012.

The Games:
UAB is 13-3 in games on this sad day.

1980 - UAB defeated Georgia State 75-62.

1981 - UAB defeated Jacksonville 73-55. The quote of the day comes from Jacksonville coach Tates Locke, who picked up back to back technicals in the game. "I'm not going to yell at players anymore. I'm not going to go back home and beat up old ladies. I'm going to yell at only people I don't like, and that's officials. They're all stupid or they wouldn't be officials."

1985 - UAB beat Wisconsin-Parkside 89-65. Wisconsin Parkside was 12-0 and ranked 14th in the NAIA poll. Only 3806 was at the game due to the threat of snow and ice.

1987 - Eddie Collins had 31 points for UAB as they defeated South Alabama 85-80.

1988 - UAB defeated Chattanooga in the championship game of the UAB Classic. Michael Charles had a career high 30 points for UAB, hitting 11 of 13 field goals.

1991 - UAB won at Charlotte 87-70.

1994 - A 10-1 UAB hosted #25 Western Kentucky in the last non conference game of the year. UAB was just outside the top 25 at #26. Blazers won 62-51. Robert Shannon led with 19 points.

1995 - In one of the most costliest wins in UAB history, the Blazers beat Alabama State 102-95 in three overtimes. A three overtime victory is usually considered thrilling but Blazer fans were sick after this game, partly because it came against a SWAC team, but mainly because Carlos Williams was lost for the season in this game. With 11:29 left in the first half, Williams went up for an uncontested dunk and came down wrong, injuring his knee. He was finished for the season. He was averaging 18.6 points a game. Neither team seemed to want to win. In the overtime periods, UAB was 9 of 21 from the free throw line. Alabama State was 6 of 16. Finally three pointers by De'shanti Foreman and Leonard Bush in the third overtime put the Hornets away. With the loss of Carlos, UAB would lose 10 of the next 16 games and finish the season 14-16, giving the Blazers their first losing season, and Coach Bartow's first losing season in 20 years dating back to his 8-18 season at Illinois.

1996 - On this date in 1996, UAB played its first ever CUSA conference game at Southern Miss. UAB lost 78-61. That first year, Conference USA had only 11 teams. Houston would join a year later. The teams were divided into three divisions, the Red Division, the White Division and the Blue Division. Other names considered for CUSA was Great American Conference, All American Conference, American Conference, National Conference and Central Conference. Reports were that Conference USA was the only name no one objected too and was chosen in desperation.

1997 - UAB lost at home 93-79 to #14 Louisville.
1998 - UAB won at South Florida 62-48.
2001 - UAB defeated Alcorn State 76-68.

2004 - In the 800th game in UAB's history, the Blazers defeated South Alabama 90-75.

2009 - UAB defeated Savannah State 63-37.

2012 - On the day that Coach Bartow died, UAB was playing #13 Florida in Gainesville. Florida hit 15 three pointers and beat the Blazer 79-61.

2016 - the Blazers hosted Middle Tennessee to open conference play and won 78-67. Middle Tennessee led 42-30 at halftime, but UAB fought back in the second. UAB held the Blue Raiders without a field goal for six minutes and only four points in the final seven minutes of the game. Robert Brown and Nick Norton led with 14 points.

Birthdays:
Happy birthday to current UAB player Luis Hurtado, born today in 1997. Although he is apparently red shirting this season, the Venezuelan native turns 21 today.

When UAB lost Gene Bartow, it lost a measure of national identity it has not regained to date. We lost more than just a coach / AD, but lost the beacon who showed our way into the future. We have not made a single conference move since he got UAB into C-USA as it existed years ago, and the present university system leadership in 2014 almost cost UAB everything he had built. The "near death experience" following 12/02/14 scared even the BOT as they risked the almost total loss of undergrad UAB from their myopic "Crimson only" vision.

They were scared of pitchforks, not losing UAB undergrad programs. The myopic BOT would love nothing more than having UAB being no more than a cash cow medical center and school.

They were scared of pitchforks, not losing UAB undergrad programs. The myopic BOT would love nothing more than having UAB being no more than a cash cow medical center and school.

While there are Crimson centric people who care only about the main campus (one killed the Toomer Oaks), even the BOT didn't want to risk the onus that would go along with the destruction of UA's B'ham's university presence. There was a real risk (in my opinion) that their move might wipe out the whole or large parts of undergrad enrollment out of resentment to that action.

They backed down so quickly because it became apparent that the whole Athletic Department at UAB was endangered, and it was all going to be blamed on them. The national feedback was negative for them - far more than they anticipated. As with Roy Moore, Alabama was being nationally embarrassed by its UA System BOT, and their "fingerprints" were all over the act.
