CJ Sapong - MLS Star
MLS website calls CJ breakout player of year.

MLS Soccer 2017 Review

With a nice embedded video of him

• Breakout Player of the Year: C.J. Sapong, Philadelphia Union

This award is given to a player in his third year or beyond who evolves from "hey he's a pretty good player with potential and his hometown fans love him" to "wow, maybe everybody in the league should pay at least some attention here, because he's doing work."

Given the year Sapong had – 16g/5a despite starting the year as a backup, and despite playing for a team devoid of creative midfielders – across 2800 minutes, this is a no-brainer. Sapong was their go-to scorer, their release valve in possession, their most creative passer of the ball in the final third, and a constant threat to draw fouls around the area.

He'll never be a Villa-esque finisher, but his 2017 was a "Brian McBride in his prime"-style performance, and it was nice to see that translate to the friendly vs. Portugal as well.

Sapong just turned 29, but remember that US attackers have a history of developing late. We could probably just name this award after Chris Wondolowski, after all, and he didn't have his breakout season (2010) until he was 27.

Yes, thanks JMaddy (and s2dsayer). Good info. Looking forward to seeing CJ assert himself into the USMNT discussion this upcoming year.

Side note, MLS schedules should be released the week of Jan. 8 if consistent with years past. I'm interested to see where DC United will be playing the few home games that will be scheduled prior to Audi Field opening this summer.

Another projection for the January USMNT camp roster includes CJ...

https://www.starsandstripesfc.com/usmnt-...erzegovina

Side note, USMNT has added a match at Lyon France against the French on June 9, Saturday, 3pmET (TV TBA). I imagine this will be a tough summer for American soccer fans 03-banghead but we should see more friendlies like this for the countries wanting a decent-to-good side to play as prep for the World Cup in Russia.

I read somewhere that the US Soccer Fed was looking into the possibility of putting together some sort of mini tournament with the nations that didn't make the WC: USA, Italy, Nederlands, Chile, Cameroon, Ghana etc. It could be a pretty good tourney if it comes to pass.

That would be terrific. Certainly need something to take away from the sting of our guys not being in Russia. I've chosen Iceland as my team to adopt and root for in Russia. Hopefully, CJ will build on his strong '17 year and take it to a new level both with the Union and USMNT in '18.

This is an understatement. I am gutted. In fact I've put myself on hiatus.

Great for CJ, being the rarity of a player who remained an amature for so long and still became an international for a country in the top 40 in the world.

The federation seemed to be ok with treating the Gold Cup as something other than an opportunity to compete at the highest level and sharpen their skills.

I know it's a bad attitude, but it's how I feel. The USMNT can call me again once they've qualified for a World Cup again.

RE: CJ Sapong - MLS Star
The positive for CJ is that given there is no World Cup, the powers that be are going to be more willing to shake things up. This gives CJ a chance where otherwise me might not have had one.

This would be awesome (the soccer NIT!)...and save some room for me on the Iceland bandwagon, WP!

RE: CJ Sapong - MLS Star
CJ is picking right back up where he left off - that is, scoring goals in each of the Union's first 2 preseason matches.

For any who subscribe to MLS Live online streaming PPV package, you might want to check this out... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/02/1...until-espn

Between the start of the 2018 MLS season on March 3 and the launch of ESPN+ this spring, MLS LIVE will be available to fans for free via MLSsoccer.com, the official MLS App and on Apple TV and Roku.

Cool, thanks for posting this. I bought the MLS package on cable this past season which I became pretty heavily addicted to...

RE: CJ Sapong - MLS Star
On the other goal the Union scored last night, take a look at CJ being pulled down (aka tackled in American style football) near the goal though occupying the keeper and freeing up the scorer for Philly... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/03/0...oplay=true

Sheesh. CJ deserves an assist for that one. 04-cheers
