Another goal for CJ tonight at home as the Fire lead Atlanta, 3-0, with time left in the first half. Woohoo!

edit note: make it a 2nd goal tonight for CJ as the Fire now leads 4-0

CJ nets #10 on the year with a nice header in a loss. This is the second time in his career that he has broken into double digit goals.

RE: CJ Sapong - MLS Star
12 goals puts him in a five-way tie for the ninth most goals in MLS.

Clubs have 3 or 4 games left, and the regular season ends October 6. On Saturday at 7:30 P.M., Chicago is at expansion Cincinnati, who is the worst club. Then Chicago hosts Toronto, who's fourth in the Eastern Conference, and ends at Orlando City, who's tenth in the Eastern Conference and could be eliminated before that game.

For the first time, MLS has every playoff round be one game at the better club rather than some rounds having two legs with the better club hosting the second game. Each conference has 12 clubs, of which 7 make the playoffs. The 1 seed gets a bye, and 2 through 7 play in the First Round or Conference Quarterfinals if you want to call it that.

CJ will be back on campus in early December; he'll be on campus speaking with students and athletes and hopefully also be doing an alumni engagement event the same week. He's up to great things on and off the field.

He started a charity The Sacred Seeds Foundation which promotes self sustainability through agriculture in underserved communities.

On a sporting note: CJ sits at 68 career goals and is 30 years old. He's been averaging 9.6 goals a year for the last five seasons. If he can sustain that for another four more years he will break the 100 goal mark, which in MLS's young history is kind of like the 500 home run barrier for MLB, although in time as people like Josef Martinez have an opportunity to rewrite the record books, it might be more like the 400 home run mark. Still...he would be up there with some legendary names of MLS history if he can get there. Too bad MLS doesn't have a HOF.

He finished the year with 69. 11 players have at least 100 career goals, and he has the sixth most goals among current players with fewer than 100. 6 of the 11 are American. MLS does not have a HOF, but U.S. Soccer does. https://www.ussoccer.com/history/nationa...ll-of-fame is about it. They had a HOF close in Oneonta, NY (near the MLB HOF), and after not having a HOF they made one at FC Dallas' Toyota Stadium.

Yeah I guess I look at it like this, guys like Marco Etcheverry or Jaime Moreno are examples of people who probably shouldn't be in the US Soccer HOF but would be first ballot members of an MLS HOF (or make it Pro soccer if you want NASL and historical teams like Bethlehem Steel or Fall River Marksmen)

CJ with 2 goals and an assist tonight, likely to be on the MLS team of the week with that kind of performance. Up to 5g and 3a on the year and now 76g for his career.

Wasn't sure how impressive this was or what a normal amount of career goals was, but I just looked it up and only 11 players have scored 100 career goals in the MLS, so 76 is pretty awesome. Just found a full list and he's #25 all-time in goal scoring. That's insane. In front of him are:
David Villa - 77
Preki, Gyasi Zardes, Josef Martinez - 79
Josh Wolff, Brian McBride - 80
Brian Ching, Dom Dwyer, Raul Diaz Arce - 82
Robbie Keane - 83

Looks like the season isn't even halfway over, so if he can get another 5 goals the rest of the season he could move up to sole possession of #19 by the end of the year. Congrats to CJ for continuing to play at a high level!

CJ is still in the midst of an amazing professional career - already one of the best among JMU alumni (high draft pick, rookie of the year, mls cup champion, club scoring record holder, etc.).

A few of those just ahead ahead of him are still playing, but assuming no injuries, he likely has at least 2.5 seasons left as Nashville would offer the 3rd year option and could break into the top 15.

Goal scorers are streaky, so its hard to say how it will turn out but if he can get another 2.5-3.5 years in his career he has a legit shot at getting to 100g, which for MLS currently appears to be sort of like the 3000 hits or 500 home runs in baseball as a major milestone marker for a career and probably a golden ticket to the HOF.

CJ got number 6 of the season and #77 of his career last weekend and it was a beaut of a header. He's now tied with David Villa all time.
