Well that's good news. I had heard he was done playing - but obviously not from a very good source. That person thought he played in the EMU game and was hurt after that. I could not remember if I saw him in that game or not. I do remember not seeing him in one of the games early on and I think I commented about that on this board, but I thought he played after that. I guess not. BTW - "that person" was me.

He was hurt against Miami.

Looks like he was hurt in the Tulsa game - maybe against Nevada. I say he may have been hurt against Nevada since he had no defensive stats against Tulsa - but shows up on the participation list. He did not start the game, but must have been in the game at some point, however briefly. May have already been hurt but had not been diagnosed yet?

He does not show up in the statistics for participation in the Miami game. Had 4 tackles in Nevada game and also 4 in Elon game. None against Tulane. DNP against Miami according to the stat sheets. Season stats show him playing in 3 games, so he did have some time on the field against Tulsa.

The other thing I noticed in looking at the stat sheets is how few tackles our LBs had in those first few games. Started to pick up later on. Linch ended up being the #1 in tackles with 75 for the season. Our departing DE's were #2 and #4 and a DB was #3. The other starting linebackers had a total of 66 and 48 on the season. Only the one with 48 is returning. Olekanma who started to come on later in the season also returns - he had 45 on the season.

Skipper was injured on the opening kickoff of the Tulsa game. Atariwa was hurt against Miami.

That makes sense.

Had to look at the statistics from other Toledo championship teams. In 2001, having played only 11 games (excluding the bowl game) our statistics show the following leaders in total tackles:

Tom Ward LB 129
David Gardner LB 106
Sid Daniels LB 98
Corey Morris LB 87
Andy Boyd Sfty 82

Stark difference and in 2 fewer games (1 game cancelled in 2001 because of 9/11)

Most good defenses have LBs with big tackle numbers. That means your line is occupying a lot of blockers and the LBs have room to be aggressive and also the instincts to know where to flow. If your secondary is making a ton of tackles that typically means guys are getting to the second level too much. Occasionally, you have a great strong safety like Barry Church who reads things so quickly he makes a lot of tackles around the line of scrimmage or in the backfield.

Does anyone know if Williams (the starting DB) who was hurt early in year is eligible for a RS. He is smaller but looked really good early and then got hurt (not sure what).

Looked over a mock draft (DraftWire on USA Today) that went through 4 rounds...Ola isn't on it.

Could be a late pick, but I think he ends up being an undrafted free agent. If that accomplishes what he wanted, then good for him. I still think he would have improved his chances had he come back.

Current undrafted free agent salaries are estimated to be around $465,000/yr.
Would work for me!04-cheers

I still just don't get this decision. He was solid for us, but not elite. Hester IMO was light years better and he lasted until the 7th round. A solid senior year would have set him up better for an NFL shot.

Again, next year is a stronger class for DE's. Ola's healthy now. Maybe his best opportunity rather than playing another season.

I agree with this. A good comparison in terms of Toledo signees would be Chester Taylor. There can be no doubt that coming back for his senior year helped Taylor immensely in the draft - and also being ready for the NFL rigors - both physically and mentally.

The risk of injury to a running back is probably greater in a college season than for a DE - so he took a somewhat risky but I think a wise route to the NFL. Wasn't it Amstutz that played a huge role in his decision? And I doubt very much Amstutz would have pointed him in that direction if he was not convinced it would help Taylor. I know a lot of people will point to Tait and what happened to him in his initial senior year. No question there is a risk of playing that extra year, but I don't believe Tait had that option in 1996.

You bring up an interesting comparison. Hester was one of the best DT's Toledo has had. Really disruptive even if double teamed, but light years better? I don't believe so. Ola is a game changer in a pretty different position. I hate to see him go, just because I enjoyed watching him at Toledo. He is such a handful for the OT. His speed and athleticism should help him fare well.

I just don't really remember Ola being as disruptive as Hester. I know different positions. Hope he doesn't end up as a chapter in the Page book of NFL drafting.
