RE: Speaking of Matt Canada
“The school would owe him about $3 million to be paid in monthly installments over the life of the contract, through 2020. That amount is offset by any future compensation Canada earns at another job, according to a copy of his contract.”

Why couldn’t NIU fire Carey and hire Canada for nothing?

LSU is going to be paying him for the next two years anyway. I don’t think he’ll be able to grab a job that pays more than his LSU contract over the next two years.

Interesting. Canada would be affordable for NIU. He has the guaranteed money from LSU so NIU could pay him eight dollars and hour and it wouldn't matter to Canada because it just comes off the bottom of what LSU pays him.

Big Ten, ACC, SEC, and MAC experience. He wouldn't be long for DeKalb on his return visit, but I'm sure he's chomping at the bit for the head coaching position and he could get the program moving back in the correct direction.

Wow. 1.5 mill a yr, or 3X what we can afford to pay a HC, to be OC.

I think he would still expect to be paid the going Sakarya of a head coach. To just assume he would do this job for free because he is getting paid from a different source is a pipe dream.

He’s going to get $3 million regardless.

Why does it matter where he gets the money from? That should be of no concern to him.

Is he somehow going to feel better if LSU pays $2 million and NIU pays $1 million? (in a hypothetical scenario). If anything the only chance he has of landing the NIU head coaching job is if they pay next to nothing because NIU would have to buyout Carey. It’s also a good way to stick it to LSU for letting him go after one year.

I'm with PP2 on this one. To me, this sort of feels like the stars aligning perfectly. NIU can low-ball Canada so they can buy out Carey. It wouldn't matter to Canada because he has his guaranteed money and he gets his head coaching job to bolster his resume. NIU can structure the deal to be bottom heavy on salary after his LSU deal has expired, and they probably won't have to pay it because if things go well, Canada won't be here more than two or three years, anyway.

NIU gets a professional coach to get this program back on track and Canada gets his coveted head coaching position at a school he is familiar with and a roster that is ready to win immediately.

What indication do we have that he can recruit? I agree that he did have some great offenses (not exactly the case at LSU) but does anyone recall his abilities to bring talent here? I also don't know how you approach that negotiation. Would it go something like: STF "would you come here for nothing if I fire Carey?"

I believe the program and good results next year will be enough for him to land top 3 MAC class

Frazier better be on a flight

2018 is Carey's last season (that we know of). You don't want a coach going into his last season wondering if he'll be back next year, especially when is comes to recruiting. The decision has to be made soon and if I'm Frazier, I'm at least sending Canada a holiday card...

He’s getting paid $3 million. He wouldn’t be coming here for nothing.

The question would be rephrased as “Would you come here for nothing from NIU, while still understanding that you’re still getting $3 million from LSU, if I fire Carey?”

With these far fetched ideas we might as well get Kevin Sumlin on that call list. He's getting paid about 5 mil a year still

A new coach is probably going to get more than a two year contract, so he would need to be paid. Is there any real meat behind the anti-Carey talk, like donations to hire a different coach, or is it just a bunch of junkies on a message board expressing their unrealistic pipe dreams?

Why does it need to be more than a 2 year deal?

I would think most coaching deals are 3 at a minimum, give the new coach some time to recruit his players and implement his system. The first year is likely to be a limited recruiting season and a transitional year, only one full year is a short time to effect change. New recruits would be red shirting or playing as true freshmen.

Just look at 2013 and 2014, Carey's first two years, were pretty good thanks to what was already here.

Coaches deals are usually 5 years. Coaches want to tell players they recruit that they will be there they entire time the player will be there. Also, if a coach doesn't have a long term deal, other coaches will use that against them them in recruiting.

Please. Why such a low ceiling. Canada in an OC at best. Les Miles, then maybe Canada. After buyouts, they both will settle for less, maybe like 500k combined. I am sure STF can convince them just so they can both stick it to LSU.
