I just sent in a question asking about the possibility of bringing back the in-season weekly Quarterback Club meetings. If others are interested in the Athletic Department bringing those back, it may help if you also chime in.

Good idea to raise the idea!

My hunch is that it ultimately comes down to the preference of the head coach: if he sees net value in doing those and it works with his schedule, they will happen; and if not, they won't -- which seems fair, since after all the head coach is sort of the centerpiece of the event.

I don't have an opinion on whether the head coach SHOULD deem them valuable. Obviously, people who liked going in the past probably believe that he should. On the other hand, few things are more valuable to a coaching staff than time. I trust Coach Bloomgren to weigh the costs and benefits of the time that it takes to prepare for and execute these events.

I always felt the main benefit was bringing the hardcore Rice football fans together on a weekly basis. That was something I felt stimulated comradery amongst guys who were all strong supporters of the program. An added benefit was getting to meet some of the players and maybe hear the coach talk for a few minutes. But, for me the main enjoyment came from the fellowship and the opportunity to hear "inside scoops" about the football and other Rice sports programs from my fellow QB Club members. I especially enjoyed when they were held on Thursday nights, before they were switched to Mondays about 10 years ago. I always felt people were in a more festive mood on Thursday nights, with the weekend and game day being just 2 days away.

Agree. I don't see why they can't do the radio broadcast from the Owl Club. Perhaps the pubs actually pay for the publicity draw, although it can't be much. Maybe the radio station has some say in the venue.

Between moving up here to the north country (relatively speaking), and not doing PA stats since J Fred passed, and not having the QB Club, I really don't feel as connected with Rice football or Rice athletics as I once did. It was such a huge part of my life for so long, and now it's just not. The few times I've tried to watch Rice football, I've pretty much given up in disgust and left by halftime. I'm really hoping Bloomgren will bring me back again. I'll give him a (short) honeymoon, but if it turns into more of the same, I won't be any less critical than I was of Bailiff. I miss it, but not enough to sit there when all that watching it does is make me angry and raise my blood pressure--and not in a good way.

I'm thinking something like a return of the QB club would be something I would enjoy.

Ditto the monthly Triple Play Dinners during the baseball season. I'd really like to ask Jk about The OG's contract situation, but recognize that's not something he's going to comment on publically.

The Bailiff shows at the GG were a reward for the GG being a Rice advertising sponsor from what I understand.

Somehow I am reminded of the of the old punch line associated with W.C. Fields: "Second prize: two weeks in Philadelphia."

My experience is that it's pretty hard to combine a radio show with a fellowship event, and that attending the radio shows in person is actually pretty dull and not very enjoyable. Not only does the radio program preclude conversation (or even moving about) during the broadcast itself, but being stuck in silence for half an hour surrounded by a loud broadcast seems to suck the life out of the audience for the rest of the evening, so that once the broadcast ends, everybody leaves. (This observation is not specific to the Bailiff shows; it has seemed to me to be the case for the basketball and baseball shows as well.)

I fondly recall the atmosphere of the QB Club meetings that Minnewaska referred to, and I miss that as well. Very convivial. As a local fan who can attend in person, if I had to choose between those and aradio show, I'd much prefer the former. But my preference is far from the decisive criterion.

RE: It's Podcast Time Again
I'd like to see the return of a traditional coach's show that's dedicated only to football. Rice Football needs much more local exposure. A comprehensive highlight show that profiles players and coaches, and that also keeps fans up to date on stadium renovations would be a good step towards achieving that goal. I guess I'll ask the AD about it. How exciting.

Win and attention will come.

The Bailiff radio show had like 10 people at it. The issue isn't the lack of a media outlet, its that no one wants to hear about us

... yet. Bloomgren turns us around like F_U did this year and then we might have an audience.
