And Rice is going to lose by multiple touchdowns. So what's your point?

I hope the Rice students and fans are energized by their new staff, and really show up to see their debut. Otherwise, this could be one of the worst attended Bayou Buckets in history.

Maybe it's a bad indication but coogfans.com makes it seem like more fans are happy than upset.

UH fans will completely forget about any and all wrongdoing by Briles should they have a good start to the season. If anyone is surprised that UH, or any other large school, lacks a moral compass, then they really haven't been paying attention to the last 30+ years of college football.

Agree. I am sure they were disgusted when these events happened at Baylor by “traitor toUH” coaches, but now since last season was disappointing they are happy to welcome the coaches back. To those folks I would suggest they find a way to bring Daddy Art back and while they are at it find a spot for Ken Starr. This is another fall out from the law firm hired by Baylor issuing only a verbal report only to Baylor’s BOT.

The extreme boards often are willing to overlook these kinds of things in pursuit of victory. If Briles turns UH into a G5 powerhouse, I wouldn't be surprised if ShaggyTexas or TexAgs clamors for him in their next hiring rounds. The only reason Parliament doesn't lose its collective head like that is because there's so few of us here. I venture to guess that almost all of us have a very close relationship to the university beyond athletics, so we temper our fandom to preserve our academic reputation. If Rice were a top 10 team with millions of "t-shirt fans," this board would be as extreme as anywhere else.

I already have Art penciled in as the next UH head coach. Word has it Tilman wanted him over Applewhite to begin with.

You cannot become a first tier university by hiring assistant coach in second tier university.

Will female applicant of UH decrease this year? I wish so.

Art has been invited as a guest, keynote speaker at the American Football Coaches Association Meetings this week. College football culture is awful and only getting worse. Art got off easy only losing his job. The fact that all in his profession are rushing to forgive him makes me ill. Rape is essentially permissible in major college athletics: (See Florida State, Oregon, Baylor, Iowa State, etc).

Reading the Rich Rod stuff out of Arizona pretty much confirms all that.

Yeah, and the reasoning for hiring him (laid out in an article in The Athletic) is just mind numbing. What is there to learn? Don't cover up rape. Seems easy enough.

RE: OT - Football Coach Status Across Town
Briles has been disinvited from speaking at the coaches' convention. But the quotes (from Berry and Briles) in the ESPN news article are disappointing on so many levels.

Quote:"I am saddened that our coaches have lost an opportunity," Berry said in a prepared statement.

When asked what concerns beyond backlash from social media prompted the cancellation, an AFCA spokesman said: "Social media criticism was the biggest concern."

In response to the decision, Briles sent a text to ESPN saying, "My intention to speak at AFCA was to educate and inform coaches of making sure Title IX policies-procedures and reporting policies are in place. I want to give back to the profession that has given so much to so many!"

The coaches need to be told to make sure Title IX policies and procedures are in place? Really? What kind of new insight could Briles really bring to the audience that they didn't already know? There shouldn't be anything new he brings to the table, especially for coaches to consider. A completely unnecessary speech that Briles probably was going to get paid for (or at least have his attendance and lodging paid for, while he schmoozed and tried to rehabilitate).

Tone deaf on so many levels here.

Question/clarification: if he has not been disinvited, what is the "cancellation"?

I think he will still be at the convention, just not speaking.

It's called brain's failure to use English properly.

Or maybe I can blame it on the modern vernacular of using a double negative to just mean I really strongly mean the negative.

That's harsh! -- I thought it might have been just a typo.

I know that many times I have started to type something, decided to re-word it, and in the process either left out a necessary "not" or added an unnecessary one -- obviously a big difference for the reader, but an easy inadvertent error for a writer.
