As soon as they can afford to do so it is time to thank coach Carey for his service to the university, move on and give someone else an opportunity.

Carey was a good Oline coach and that is where he belongs. I would not let him run my offense as a coordinator and I would never consider him as my head coach.

Yeah I'd say he can be o line or tight end coach at smaller P5. Maybe special teams coordinator at best.

Do we have to do another year of this is my question? Hopefully one more year wonder us back to much further.

Special teams coordinator? Haha I could see that; Carey suggests to the HC that they should run a fake punt on 4th and 18 from their own 10 yard line in the first quarter down 7-0. The HC would say something like are you nuts; no way!

Carey's plan was to get a pass interference call. Complete moron!

As I said, that may not have been the dumbest play ever run by NIU, but it is sure in the team photo.

Not only was it the dumbest play ever run by NIU, it is probably the dumbest play ever run in the history of college football.

And then to add fuel to the stupidity fire, Coach Carey states that his objective was drawing a defensive penalty. NIU will be mocked for that play and that response for years to come

I guess because Carey has one more football season left under his contract and it’s not common for a coach to go into that season as a lame duck coach. What you usually see is the coach extended or fired before the start of that season.

Why do we allow a coach who loses by 25 points to a 6-6 team to be allowed a pass despite his consistent inability to beat teams with a pulse and the embarrassment he brings?

1-for-8 in postseason with predominately uncompetitive blowouts.

Who are the morons who don't understand the fire Carey campaign?! I hate them more than Carey! Do you remember the 10 years or so before him. How well coached the team was compared to this?

The bottom line is Carey was given the keys after Doren left without any real coaching assessment/search to find someone better. They deferred to staying in house vs bringing someone else in. The last few years are proving Carey can beat up the mediocre MAC teams and upset a few average B10 teams but that is about it. He obviously cannot recruit a QB either.

I think the players backed him too right? We could have given him interim but then maybe asked Novak and others for help.

I doubt they'll fire him with year remaining . Although won't this bowl payoff cover most of that ?

No the bowl payout won't cover it and the department can't afford it. They can't get a nutrition thing built for 250k without donations which shows how low of funds they have. You ride out his contract and see what happens next season. I'm still optimistic with the recruits we have coming in and got last season. Probably 6-7 win season beating up on the bottom dwellers again, but if we get a QB or Childers takes a great step forward, will be better.

They absolutely need to change some of the playbook tho

We may be stuck with Carey for another year, but he is going to leave a very good group of young players. For all of his tactical missteps, his recruiting as of late has been a positive. And that's what the next coach will get to work with.

I can't imagine that uncool fatass being a good recruiter. Not smooth at all. Doesn't portray the player coach type either. Always chewing out players on sideline.

Even if the players backed him, they could have told the new coach to keep Carey as OL coach. No other 1-A program, not even an EMU program five years ago, would have given him a head coaching job with his mediocre resume.

Novak was a legendary NIU coach.Jerry Kill was great.Doeren brought us to the promise land. Carey had a promising start but has trended backwards ever since.
