RE: Does Carey deserve an extension?
His start was good because he inherited good players, especially Lynch. Even then we got killed in the MACC and then lost to Utah State.

And it's been downhill ever since.

It’s a miracle that he gets anyone to sign with NIU. No personality at all.

RE: Does Carey deserve an extension?
This season convinced me that we will never return to our recent success under coach Carey. He has no ability to evaluate talent and he has no football sense. His fake punt in the bowl game is the worst play call I have ever seen and I have been watching football for over 60 years.

What does he do well as a HC ? Serious question. Do we have any proof he was integral in these last 2 recruiting classes or was it more the program and assistants? I haven't heard any stories of him being vital in a recruits mind.

I'm wondering how our recruiting class is being considered so great. Toledo and WMU were getting more sought after players. As usual, most of our recruits had minimal offers or offers from FCS or maybe a couple low G5s. Two of our better recruits bolted for P5 offers and not even good P5 offers.

Good point ^ the overall rating is aided by amount of recruits. That factors into composite score I believe.

I'm not saying it doesn't turn out to be a great class of players. Hopefully it is. I'm just wondering what about this class is that different from most of the players we've usually gotten. A couple might have one or two P5 offers but for the most part they appear to be the same type of recruits we've normally gotten.

Yeah no big steals. I'm hoping this ends up being best class ever because we'll need it. Toledo got an espn 300 qb! But Toledo has better stadium, city, brand recognition, coaching staff and student support.

Don't feel like typing that much but if you look at some of the signees they have a lot more P5 and better AAC offers than we typically get. Hall is an under armour all American, something we've never had and my guess won't again unless we are in another conference some day. Robinson had some real good offers and Jennings had a Wisconsin offer. Right there are things we don't get in our classes.

Good point about hall. I'm not sure how he got invited but I'll take it.

RE: Does Carey deserve an extension?
I wouldn't mind seeing Carey go. The firing talk is a joke, financially not possible. The only way Carey goes is by not renewing his contract.

Best case scenario next year is probably 1 OOC wins and 6-7 MAC wins. The MAC West may be down next year with Turd rebuilding and we have CMU and Turd in DeKalb. We could end up in the MACC without a win over a team with a winning record. If we go 8-4 (best case scenario) and back to the MACC, and get lucky enough to win the MACC or bowl game I wouldn't be surprised to see an extension.

If we go 5-7 again the decision is much easier.

I can't believe I'm typing this but, here's a very "Basic" answer - He's been "serviceable" - C+ - B-

Under his leadership:

*We're consistently in the MAC hunt.
*We consistently go to Bowling - 4 in 5 years
*We consistently recruit our area.
*He hasn't sexually harassed anyone.
*He's not going anywhere.
*He's gradually improved.

If you take a look at just the facts, he's as good as/better than most of our Head Coaches within the last 50 years.

Every time you go to the "hiring window", there is risk - risk of hiring: Sadler, Corso, Culpepper, Ippoliti or; risk of hiring someone who is here for 2 years and bails and, you find yourself back at the window again.

I'm no fan but, the more and more I think about it, we could (& have) do MUCH worse.

I just wish he could take a few lessons in football. Basic Football 101 - How to Call Plays and Plays You Should Never Call.

I disagree that he has gradually improved. From my perspective he fumbled away a promising season with some quality players this year.

Who cares about going bowling if your not going to prepare and get blown out. (Laughed at the last 2 now).

There is a difference in losing a bowl game and getting embarrassed. That fake punt was embarassing and the 30 yards of offense or whatever vs Boise last year in the first half was embarrassing.

I rather roll the dice and get the stepping stone guys. It almost always works for Toledo. Our program was and csn be in same position again. Were it ends up attracting good coaches. They see it as easy way to get a bigger job and payday.

Plus almost everyone goes to a bowl game nowadays. Nearly half the MAC this season. There's no positive in making a bowl game just to get embarrassed on national television. What did those 15 extra practices get us? The offense looked no better than before.

The bar has been lowered for sure. It went from winning conference titles and bowl games to just being in the MAC hunt and people being satisfied with just going to a bowl game.

As far as consistently recruiting our area, where else are we supposed to recruit?

I can’t agree with “gradually improved” either. Started 33-6. And now he’s 21-18 in his past three years. He has definitely regressed.
