Here is some game info from the Chrummicle

HOUSTON VS. SAM HOUSTON STATE
• When/where: 5:30 p.m., Paige Sports Arena, Columbia, Mo.
• Records: Houston 0-0, Sam Houston State 0-0.
Houston update: The Tom Penders era dawns in Missouri in the Guardians Classic. The Cougars have been retooled by Penders, who demands pressure defense and a fast-breaking offense. The Cougars return their backcourt of Andre Owens (16 ppg) and Lanny Smith (8.4 ppg) from last year's 9-18 squad.
Sam Houston State: The Bearkats, 13-15 last season, are expecting bigger things this year, if only because they have their big man back. Senior Eddy Fobbs, a shot-blocking 6-11 center, returns from a redshirt season after blowing out his knee.

Houston Upends Sam Houston State, 72- 69

By R.B. FALLSTROM
AP Sports Writer

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Ramon Dyer scored all eight of his points in the final five minutes, helping Houston rally from a 10-point second-half deficit for a 72-69 season-opening victory over Sam Houston State in the first round of the Guardians Classic Monday night.

Lanny Smith scored 22 points for Houston, which will play the winner of the Missouri-Brown game later Monday in the second round on Tuesday. The Cougars won in the debut of coach Tom Penders, who had been out of coaching for three years and inherited a team that was 9-18 last season.

Houston trailed 63-53 with 6:29 to go after a 14-4 run by Sam Houston State. The Cougars outscored Sam Houston 17-3 in one finishing stretch and ended the game on a 19-6 run.

That included five straight points from Dyer, including a 3-point play that gave Houston its first second-half lead at 64-63 with 3:28 to go

Way to go Coogs!!!!!

Kick-a$$! 04-rock <-- :gocoogs:

Here's a link to the Comical story: <a href='http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2903000' target='_blank'>"UH passes test of character to open Penders era", by Michael Murphy</a>

[EDIT] Damn Comical made me register! Funk 'dat, I'm posting the story for y'all.

Cougars refuse to quit, rally past Sam Houston St.

COLUMBIA, MO. - The Cougars had to travel all the way to the Show Me State to play Sam Houston State on Monday evening in the Guardians Classic, but they showed plenty in this first game of the Tom Penders era.

First of all, the Cougars proved they won't fold in a tight game, coming back from a double-digit deficit in the final minutes to nip the Bearkats 72-69 in a thriller at the Paige Sports Arena.

"This was a breath of fresh air, I guess you could say," said Houston guard Lanny Smith, who led the Cougars with 22 points. "We came out nervous and didn't really play up to par. But now that we've got this out of the way, I don't think we'll have any more problems."

Yes, it lacked artistic merit, but it was a win, a rarity for the Cougars the past few years. And the fact that it was so close made it all the better for Penders, former coach at Texas and George Washington.

"This is what we needed," he said. "Really, if we had come in here and won by 30 points, I think that (tonight against Missouri) we'd be in serious, serious trouble. It was a win over a good program. ... I'll take it."

Missouri beat Brown 68-60 in Monday's nightcap to set up tonight's second-round game.

The winner advances to a semifinal Nov. 23 at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., against either Creighton or Iona. They play tonight in Omaha, Neb.

If the Cougars hope to start the season 2-0, they will have to fix a lot of things.

Like their shooting.

They were horrendous, shooting just 34.4 percent from the floor (22-of-64) and 26.7 percent from the 3-point line (8-for-30). Three top scoring threats — Andre Owens, Chris Lawson and Dwight Jones II — combined to shoot 5-for-31 from the floor.

"It was a great opening win for us," Penders said. "Was it a great opening performance? I wouldn't say so. But our kids played their hearts out tonight."

Owens, who missed three straight free throws in the final 31 seconds, just shook his head afterward.

"I think I was too hyper (and) too amped up," said Owens. "I started rushing my shot and got out of rhythm. But my teammates and coaches told me to keep shooting."

With the Cougars trailing 63-53 with 6:28 left to play, redshirt freshman Andrew Francis stripped Sam Houston's Aaron Wade near midcourt. Francis took off for the basket, laid the ball in and was fouled by Ryan Griffin. Francis made the foul shot to cut the Bearkats' lead to 63-56 with 5:54 left in the game.

"You could sense the change in momentum out there," said Francis. "I just knew my team needed energy out there. My main concern was winning the game, so I tried to make the plays that could get us the win."

The Bearkats (0-1) turned the ball over on five straight possessions, and all were turned into points by the Cougars. After the fifth turnover, Ramon Dyer completed the comeback with a three-point play that gave Houston a 65-63 lead.

The Bearkats (0-1) tied a tournament record by turning the ball over 29 times.

"I think that when we started putting pressure on their guards, they started getting rattled," Smith said."Once we got them rattled, that's what really killed them. It wasn't the prettiest win, but it was a win, and we'll take it."

So, who's this cat Michael Murphy? (I know, most importantly he's NOT Wizig and NOT Mullet Head Dale, but other than that.) Is he the new C-USA guy?

Well back to reality!!! Coogs lose to Missouri

Andre Owens nets 16 points and Lanny Smith 14.

ST. LOUIS - Linas Kleiza had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Missouri outscored Houston 20-1 over a 6 minute span that began near the end of the first half of a 77-61 victory over Houston in the second round of the Guardians Classic on Tuesday night.

Missouri (2-0) endured a first-half stretch in which it made one basket in more than 11 minutes and fell behind by five points. The Tigers had little trouble scoring the rest of the game, shooting 50 percent and going 12-for-23 from 3-point range.

Missouri hit only three of its first 18 from long range in the opening round against Brown.

Thomas Gardner scored all but three of his 18 points in the second half for the Tigers, who advanced to the semifinals on Tuesday in Kansas City. Jimmy McKinney had 16 points and Jason Conley 14, and Kleiza added five assists.

&nbsp;

Andre Owens had 16 points and Lanny Smith 14 for Houston (1-1), which last faced Missouri in 1982. Houston rallied from a 10-point second half deficit in the first round against Sam Houston State for its first season-opening victory since 1999, but never threatened a repeat comeback.

The Cougars led 29-24 with 3:47 left in the first half before the roof caved in. Jason Conley had a 3-pointer at the end of the half and another at the start of the second half of the run that gave Missouri a comfortable 44-30 lead with 15:30 to play.

The lead grew to as many as 21 points later in the half, a 62-41 bulge with 7:36 left.

Missouri totaled four points during its first-half dry spell, a basket by Kevin Young and two free throws, before heating up.

The Tigers have had double double outings in each of the first two games. Gardner had the first of his career on Monday with 19 points and 12 rebounds and has come off the bench both games.

Kleiza had three double doubles as a freshman last season and missed one in the opener by only one rebound

I followed the game on game tracker. We went cold and the beginning of the second half and it was all bad. I like what I read though. Seemed as though we are causing a lot of turnovers and the shooting was better in the first half.

I will get to see the Coogs live on Friday. I got permission from the wife to go 04-rock

Dyer led the Cougars with 12 points.

Final Stats

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Ivan Harris scored a career-high 19 points and Tony Stockman added 18 as Ohio State beat Houston 78-61 Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Guardians Classic.

Ohio State (4-0) will play the winner of the Missouri-Creighton game on Wednesday night for the championship.

Harris connected on 9-of-11 field-goal attempts. Harris, a 6-8 sophomore forward from Springfield, Ohio, who started only two games last season, had scored just 12 points in the Buckeyes' first three games. Harris' previous high was 13 points on Nov. 24, 2003 against San Diego State.

After the two teams traded early baskets, Ohio State scored 19 unanswered points to open up a 21-2 advantage with 13:20 left in the first half. Houston (2-2) never threatened after that.

Harris scored 10 of the Buckeyes' first 21 points, while Stockman had eight points.

&nbsp;

The Cougars went 5:45 without a point after their first basket, going 0-for-5 and committing three turnovers in that span. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, came out sizzling, making 11 of their 12 shots, with Harris making five straight baskets in that stretch.

Ohio State led 44-30 at halftime after the Buckeyes outscored the Cougars 18-8 in the paint in the first half.

Houston scored six straight points early in the second half to trim Ohio State's lead to 46-36 after a Ramon Dyer field goal with 17:47 left. Harris answered that with a 3-pointer, giving the Buckeyes a 49-36 lead, and the Cougars could never get within 10 points.

Terence Dials dominated the boards with a game-high 12 rebounds for Ohio State, while senior guard Brandon Fuss-Cheatham had nine assists.

The Cougars were led by Dyer with 12 points. Andre Owens added 10 points.

The two teams were meeting for the first time since the 1968 NCAA Final Four, when Ohio State won 89-85 in the third-place game.

Look's like Penders still has some of the same issues to deal with. Poor shooting, rebounding and perimeter defense. I know when we played McNeese St. They had a player who's name should have been Money the way he was draining threes on us.

Coogs avenge earlier loss to Missouri

Quote:Houston Edges Missouri, 57-55
Andre Owens scores a game-high 24 points for the Cougars.

Nov. 24, 2004

Final Stats

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Andre Owens scored a game-high 24 points, including a free throw with 9.7 seconds left, as Houston beat Missouri 57-55 for third place on Wednesday night in the Guardians Classic.

The Cougars won despite not making a field goal in the last six minutes. Lanny Smith's 3-pointer with 6:01 to play gave Houston a 55-46 lead.

With 16 seconds remaining, the Tigers' Kevin Young was called for walking, nullifying a field goal. And just before the buzzer, Linas Kleiza missed what would have been a game-tying layup.

Missouri (2-3) has lost three straight after winning its first two games of the season.

Jason Conley led Missouri with 13 points, while Jimmy McKinney contributed 13. Kleiza, who had 19 points against Houston last week, was held to nine points.

&nbsp;

The Tigers, who connected on 12 3-pointers in defeating Houston 77-61 on Nov. 16 at Columbia, missed their first six 3-pointers before McKinney hit a 3-pointer to start the second half. Missouri was only 2-for-16 in 3-point range.

The Cougars led by as many as nine points in the first half behind the shooting of Owens, who had 15 points halftime. Houston led 35-28 at halftime.

The Tigers committed nine turnovers and hit only 34.5 percent of their first-half shots as the Cougars went 15-of-30 from the field.

Houston started the second half cold, scoring just two points - an Englebert Cherrington field goal - in the first eight minutes as Missouri pulled within one with 12:38 left on a Kalen Grimes free throw. But Owens made back-to-back 3-pointers with 8:23 left to start a 10-2 run.

The Tigers responded with seven unanswered points, including three from Conley, to pull within two points with 3:14 left.

Missouri played without reserve guard Spencer Laurie, who has missed the past two games with a sprained right ankle.
