Its a problem throughout the country. Looks like Santa Barbara has a better plan than most places.

Santa Barbara, along with other uber desirable places like Aspen, have serious problems with housing. That's not going to change.

-----

Santa Barbara has a few options, none of which are optimal.

1) They can institute rent control, and actually did, but that hurts the availability of new affordable units for people who lose housing.

2) They can regulate new housing construction to ensure that a certain number of affordable units be built in return for free market ones

3) They can build public housing

4) They can raise wages, but that might simply crowd out the disabled and create rental inflation.

Plenty of cheaper places to live. I choose to live in Arkansas. My Mortgage is less than $600 per month on a 2000 square foot home on a half-acre lot. These people that are choosing to suffer in places like California are f@cking stupid. Smaller populated states offer plenty of opportunities and quality living.

Or lower regulations and allow more housing, increasing the supply.

living in a car in LA
If I lived in LA, I'd have to live in my car as well and buy a gym membership to shower. And the dippos consider me to be borderline rich.

Geez, the only way to improve something is to regulate it MORE. Come on, get with the program. 04-cheers

I lived in San Diego. Lovely but the people are conditioned to living like indentured serfs of the landlords. The house I nearly have paid off in Cincinnati would have another zero on the price tag out there. I’d be raising my family renting in the hood had I stayed there.

RE: living in a car in LA
You're right about the price of homes in Califa. I have some neighbors that have moved here from there and with the money that they've paid there they pay cash for a house here. You cannot beat the price of homes in El Paso and the bargain that you get for your money. We might not have the trees but look at California, they have trees and right now they're ashes. It might rain cats and dogs but with our sandy soil it seeps down pretty fast.

But, I'm saying no more we don't want North Easterners or Californians to know our little secret. They need to stay there, our Liberal leaders are bad enough, we don't want more.
