RE: AAC expansion candidates?
What even are the logistics of removing a team? I don't recall ever hearing of a case of a conference just dropping teams and replacing them with someone else? Unless I'm forgetting someone. Seems to me there could be some lawsuits.

The AAC really needs UCONN to get good at basketball again and UC to be good at football again. This would go along way.

To David St's credit, he didn't list Slippery Rock, Bellarmine, or West Virginia Tech as potential candidates. His analysis is at least improving, correct? On the other hand, curses to doss and all of his immediate family for posting this topic and drawing David St to our board!

Old Dominion brings the Norfolk tv market. They are already spending at the AAC levels.

Southern Mississippi would bring one of the last CUSA top football program into the fold.

VCU and Dayton both have been mentioned to bring the RPI and get more multi-bids into the basketball tournament.

Army will not join.

MWC schools will not join. The last time Boise State and San Diego State tried to join? The Big East 7 threw a tantrum, and left.

UTSA and North Texas could be replacements if Houston and SMU leaves for a P5 conference.

What, no North Dakota or North Dakota St? And what happened to Arkansas Tech?

The aac doesnt need to expand. It needs uc and ecu to get back to being relevant football programs (uc to more than that)... and it needs uconn and Memphis to be top 50 basketball programs. If that happens the league will be in relatively good shape.

Having been to a game at Umass this year I’m laughing that they’re even being brought up.

The guy who brought it up is a troll account, although one of our regulars has brought them up frequently in the past as well.

I agree with Mark--- no expansion (unless the networks tell us they will give us a whopping pay increase if we do).

Yes, those things will help. And I believe that both UConn and Memphis could be Top 50. But the days of UConn being Top 10 are over. No money has started to damage their brand, maintain quality coaches, and ability to recruit.

However what you have not addressed is that the bottom feeders of this league are so bad that it will never allow football playoff teams, top seeded basketball teams, and larger TV revenues. Simply not enough national cache at the top, and way too much negative at the bottom.

A few things.

1. You are right that the AAC will never make a 4 team playoff in football. It just won't happen and it's not just because of bottom feeders, but the cartel won't let it.
2. With Houston, SMU and UCF emerging (SMU to a much larger extent) as NIT/NCAA type teams and Tulane being much better the bottom feeders in the league of shrunk tremendously. Really it's ECU/USF right now. Credit the AAC who schedule it's top teams in a way to minimize games against bottom feeders. I think you will see better seeds this year than you expect.
3. If Uconn/Memphis get back to being top 50 type teams and all other things stay equal the league suddenly becomes very viable for several bids and good seeds. Go back an look at the Mountain West a few years ago...not name teams but had many bids and very high seeds for a similar reason. The Big East is doing it now with teams that couldn't sniff the tournament when the old big east was together. Bring the bottom up and the opportunities for wins the committee looks for really get better.

I think UConn and Memphis will get back to chalk once they get new coaches. Ollie and Tubby need to go.

RE: AAC expansion candidates?
Also kill Aresco for the P6 stuff all you want, but the AAC is absolutely elevated above the rest of the non power conferences both in terms of overall on field results and perception nationally. It is a more desired spot for coaches and it gets better TV spots. People may mock that idea, but I think he's done a good job making the league not just another G5 conference...it's clearly the standard for those leagues. In basketball it's also still largely considered a power conference by the National Media.

In truth we all know the financial limitations and external factors that make it hard to get on the level of those Big 5 conferences, but I think the league has done relatively nicely all things considered.

Memphis did it forever in CUSA. UConn's athletic department still brings in more revenue than several P5 schools. I'm not so sure I agree with this.

Memphis did it in a different time before P5/G6 crap. And was fortunate to be in such a bad conference that they won every game ( the Wichita effect). And as you are aware Memphis 'did it' with dirty recruiting. They had an entire season vacated. Takes money to do those things.

UConn's athletic department revenue data is from a couple years ago. Football program in the dumps, men's hoops failing expectations, Big East buy outs dissolved, and still in the AAC - home of the bad TV contract. Without Geno's girls, they would be UC.

You clearly don’t understand expansion, nor my need to have green chile and craft beer coursing through my bloodstream.

haha

and, just read my post...I apologize for the bad wording. I was on the pot typing it out on my iPhone at the time.

Please clarify...

You were ON THE POT, or ON POT?

Why? I think that we have a higher trajectory in the combination of sports that matter and academics.

I don't think academics matter as much as people think. If it mattered Louisville would not be in the ACC, the B12 would have never taken WVU and the B1G would have taken Missouri over Nebraska since the Corn was getting kicked out of the AAU.

I have always considered the academic thing a fantastic fable.

I don't know about that. It was good in general, but what I'd like is, for Jerry to provide some substantiation for his opinion that CSU is ahead of us for the Big X (not XII) expanding. Substantiation other than his typical negative lamentations about UC in general.

It is, I admit, opinion.
