You clearly don’t understand expansion, nor my need to have green chile and craft beer coursing through my bloodstream.

ECU was a horrendous add to the conference. Colorado State should have been the target from the get go for that spot. They would have been a huge pickup for the American and likely would have opened things up for a few more potential adds down the road (BYU, maybe Boise).

Look... CSU was very public that they didn't want to join the American. Really.

1) CSU has a long-standing rival in Wyoming and they (CSU) said that there was zero chance of them severing that relationship.
2) "The Front Range" bloc of CSU, Wyoming, Air Force, and New Mexico are the driving force in the MW. (Utah used to be part of that bloc as well.) In other words, CSU is one of the "Big Deals" of the MW; they were pivotal in forming it, they exercise a dominant force in running it. CSU wasn't giving that up for little in return to be an outlier in the AAC.

Who knows where things lie five years later, but I doubt very much that anything has changed. CSU probably is ahead of us in any chance of the Big XII expanding right now and they are certainly in the "cat-bird" seat should the B12 implode. So, barring a major bump in conference compensation (which I doubt is happening), why should CSU give up what they have in the MW and join the AAC?

(ECU actually was a "solid" add, IMO... There really weren't any better options at the time. It's Tulsa that bothers me. Tulsa is a tiny, private school in a small, Oklahoma city. They were added for their recent past success in FB and to a lesser extent in BB...and they have absolutely gone in the dumper in both sports since then. ECU at least has a shared conference history with us, is a reasonable trip for UC, and is a large institution... Just my opinion, of course.)

2023-24 will be the next shuffling and I fear we will still be on the outside looking in. All dressed up and no place to go.

It is our fate. Learn to be happy with who we are.

Thanks for the unnecessary details. My love of New Mexican green chile has suddenly turned into images of Gold Star.

I don't think academics matter as much as people think. If it mattered Louisville would not be in the ACC, the B12 would have never taken WVU and the B1G would have taken Missouri over Nebraska since the Corn was getting kicked out of the AAU.

Good post, and I agree on every level. I'm okay with ECU, given that they had longer standing success, and they're in a rapidly growing state with good recruiting grounds (albeit four other power conference schools). Tulsa may also have been seen as a bridge from Memphis to Houston and SMU, but I wholly agree that they were a mistake. Look at this way - somewhere around 3% of their undergrads on are on the freaking football team.

As for the MWC, they've regressed a bit since the P5 money took hold, but geography is huge. You can hop in your car with buddies and drive an hour to see the game in Laramie, then be back on campus to go out that night. Air Force is two hours away, and they annual game against Colorado is less than an hour, whether in Denver or Boulder. A number of recent UC grads have expressed that their roadtrips to Pitt, WVU, and Louisville were a huge part of their UC experience, and I suspect it's similar for a number of CSU students.

Frankly, I see valid points on both sides of this argument. Listening to some talking heads in national media regarding MLS expansion has been sobering. While a major league market, they seem to know or care little about Cincinnati. Some look at city population and are dismissive, ignoring a metro of 2 million plus.

I've never believed expansion candidacy was all about on-field/court excellence. But I now believe for UC it will be critical to have ranked, recognized, winning teams in men's basketball and football to separate itself from other viable candidates.

Pretty much... outsiders just don't think our city is very sexy, especially if they have never been here. A lot of them think of us as a rust-belt town that had its better days, ala Youngstown or Steubenville. Speaking of which, I've been up here in Youngstown visiting the wife's family... one of my wife's cousins just visited our city for the first time a couple months ago and was simply stunned. He had no idea how big the city was and how much it offered.

I think the city needs to do what cities like Columbus and Indianapolis have done and annex the rest of the county. Get the city population up to 802,000 (per the 2010 census). People don't look at metro areas because the rest of the metro is so far removed from the city. Technically Lancaster, Ohio is part of the Columbus metro area but nobody ever confuses Lancaster as part of Columbus.

That's an interesting point. Cincinnati, compared to many other cities, is relatively small in total area. For comparison sake, Cincy is 79.9 square miles. Columbus is 217. Indianapolis is a sprawling 361 square miles, putting it up there with Houston, Phoenix, etc. Other regional cities are similar - Louisville is 325, Memphis is 315. When you look at population, those cities are "larger", but they're decidedly less dense and smaller in terms of metro population.

I fear no matter what we do we will be ignored. I have read many articles where they mention UConn, USF, UCF, UH, CSU, Boise, BYU but not UC.

I think we are light-years ahead of USF. USF's whole schtick right now is Charlie Strong. Seriously, before he set foot on their sideline, they were deader-than-dead in the realignment talk.

UCF is the hot property at the moment, but everything hinges on their success after Scott Frost. Both USF and UCF are only in the sweepstakes because they are in Florida...but UCF fits the "traditional" university vibe better than USF.

Boise is only on "DavidSt"'s list. And that should be all you need to know. But they are academically a joke so the PAC won't take them, they are too far west so the Big XII won't take them, and they are a gimmick program because of the "Smurf-turf."

BYU has to be a factor, but their LDS affiliation leaves them hamstrung.

Houston? I have always thought Houston suffers from A LOT of what UC suffers from: historically they were a "commuter" school, they live in a market dominated...not by one, but TWO...major university brands (Texas and TA&MU), pro-sports, yada...yada...yada. I can only see them being a "must get" if Texas and Texas Tech both departed for the PAC.

Colorado State has several things going in their favor... New, reportedly amazing stadium; only one competitor in their market...Colorado. But Denver (I grew up there) is a PRO city: Broncos #1, Rockies #2, Avalanche and Nuggets #3. The Buff's own the Colorado university market...CSU is a distant #2. Plus, historically, Fort Collins was NOT in the "Denver" market; but Denver now has grown to encompass Fort Collins 60 miles to the north, almost to be contiguous with Colorado Springs 90 miles to the South. (The Palmer Divide and the Academy will stop the two cities from ever really merging...) But Denver now sprawls almost 100 miles north-to-south and almost 30 miles deep from west-to-east. (Where I grew up used to be on the extreme east of the metro...nothing but prairie behind the house I grew up in. Now, the city of Aurora goes another 15 miles to the east from where I was a kid...)

Ultimately, who knows how the cards all fall out.

RE: AAC expansion candidates?
UMass. have been mentioned for all sports to help keep UConn. from bolting all sports except football to the Big East. They are like an island where they are at.

Old Dominion brings the Norfolk tv market. They are already spending at the AAC levels.

Southern Mississippi would bring one of the last CUSA top football program into the fold.

VCU and Dayton both have been mentioned to bring the RPI and get more multi-bids into the basketball tournament.

Army will not join.

MWC schools will not join. The last time Boise State and San Diego State tried to join? The Big East 7 threw a tantrum, and left.

UTSA and North Texas could be replacements if Houston and SMU leaves for a P5 conference.

RE: AAC expansion candidates?
Best case scenario is to remove Tulsa and ECU, and pick up two western teams or maybe UMass and someone else already mentioned. I think UCONN needs a travel buddy.

Speaking of islands, we are sort of on an island ourselves, who is the closest opponent to us? Memphis? Temple? Too bad thereviews really aren't any other good regional options. Maybe Marshall or Ohio, but do we want to elevate Ohio and then compete for recruits?
