Irish straight best friends marry to 'avoid paying €50,000 inheritance tax' on house
http://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-new...y-11739904

LOL, smart move.

Two straight best friends tied the knot today to avoid paying €50,000 inheritance tax on a house.

A harpist serenaded Matt Murphy and Michael O’Sullivan as they walked down the aisle arm-in-arm at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital Registry Office in Dublin in front of 11 witnesses.

Matt, 83, decided a few months ago to leave his home in
Stoneybatter, West Dublin, to dad of three Michael, who is his carer.

The pair, who have been pals for almost 30 years and live together, realised Michael would face a crippling tax bill after Matt died.

I knew a gay British man that married an American lesbian to become a U.S. citizen. It was funny that those not close to them thought they were a couple.

Knew a gay Haitian-American who married a straight Haitian woman so she could get citizenship. Dude was absolutely on flames but somehow passed muster.

I think it is only a matter of time until friends, hetero or homo, get married for either tax or insurance purposes.
For self employed of indy contractors finding and being able to buy affordable health insurance is like a second mortgage payment. If a friend works for the government or a large corporation, being able to get on their plan is a gold mine.

I don't agree with marrying for these reasons based on my value of the purpose and institution of marriage. However, I can at least understand how economics can greatly impact personal decisions.

Marriage for convenience isn’t new.

Well this all much different. We are talking about not marrying to start a family and all of the regular normal stuff. There really should not be anything stopping 2 brothers from marrying. If a couple of brothers, or sisters, are divorced and 60 something and they have no interest in marrying again. Why not get married for income tax purposes and auto next of kin stuff?

I was about to say the same thing. It may be accelerating in frequency but certainly not new.

It'll happen and some idiots will support it. Bank on it.
