Updated & Changes to Athletic Master Plan Projects
I went thru the current Athletic Master Plan Capital Projects.
http://www.niusustain.com/campaign-overview/#

While going thru the projects I noticed some differences with the orignal document from Oct 2014.
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/niu/...r_Plan.pdf

To me this is a positive sign that while the state budget made Athletics not able to move forward publicly on anything, there has been some real progress that can be seen with to the changes between the two plans.

Here is what I have noticed in order of the Capital Projects links
New projects I also included the cost.

The Convo
The main Convo addition image has been removed. This was the main (most expensive) part of the project costing 11mil.

However there have been 2 two smaller projects have been added and seem MUCH more realistic to be added MUCH sooner.

$50k
"A new video room within the Convocation Center will be used for all NIU athletic programs to prepare our Huskie student-athletes athletically and academically. This video room will house the best film equipment possible."

IMO this is a on point use of money for actually trying to improve the team and for recruiting of future players and coaches.

$200k
The Nelson Club is the premium area for NIU men’s basketball and other Convocation Center events. The room is dedicated after David and Linda Nelson for their generous support. We strive to provide a first-class experience for our donors and season ticket members and this renovation will allow us to enhance the gameday and event atmosphere.

I do not know how the Nelson Club is now but I would imagine that it has not seen much more than a superficial improvement since it was built in 2002. This is an opportunity to improve the high end offerings as a sold out Nelson Club (included floor seats) is worth more than the rest of the convo ticket sales for the best MBB attendance of the year.

Gymnastic Pit - This is a totally new adder
$60k
"These enhancements provided the gymnastics team with a more comprehensive practice space. These improvements greatly enhance the student-athlete experience and better prepare the team for competition."

This is basically a realistic understanding that the full Olympic building is a bit further down the road and this needs to be done now to stay competitive and even improve on what they have.

Baseball Stadium
Totally new renderings has been uploaded.

Changed include...
Reducing seating from 1500 to 1000 but still leaving room for more if needed in the future. Also it SEEMS that the 200-300 chariback seats are no longer in the plan

There is an entirely new structure add here that is to be the indoor batting cages and also includes bathrooms, showers and lockerooms.

The scoreboard moving from Center to Left field.

NIU logo on center field. Also its not mentioned but I am cretin that I was told it is planned to be a Field Turf playing surface.

The visitor bullpen rotating 90 degrees. This change along with the new structure mentioned above give a lot of room for expansion by quite a lot if ever needed (to attract a summer league team)

Softball Stadium
The original plan mentioned of a new perimeter fence with a concrete curb at the base. This is no longer mentioned.

The layout of the bleacher addition has been refined but seems to still be kept at 1000 total seats.

Olympic Sports Village & Indoor Tennis Center
No changes noticed - I think other than the Convo main project these are the furthest off.

Scoccer & Track
A rendering has been uploaded for the new stands
[Image: bg-natural.jpg]

Nutrition Center
$250k
"Due to new NCAA legislation, we have the opportunity to provide nutritional support for our student-athletes more frequently, directly impacting their nutritional goals and athlete performance. Nutritional eating plans are essential for our student-athletes to train and compete at the highest level and we are committed to not only accommodate but advance the nutritional health of our 400+ student-athletes. The Nutrition Center will serve our student-athletes nutritional needs and will also serve as a training ground for NIU’s Kinesiology Department."

It was not on the orignal plan because it wasn't a thing back when the NCAA said the schools couldn't give the SAs snacks. This should be a top project for overall recruiting for all sports.

Huskie Stadium
No changes are noticed on the top view rendering but several newer 3D renderings have been uploaded...The only new thing is a more even transition between the top of the East stands and the new South Bowl seating. This looks much better than the top view originally released.

Also 3 others have been made public within the past 2 years (2016 HAF packet I believe) but some may have not yet seen them...

Anything about replacing the video scoreboard in the Convo? That thing is hard to read.

RE: Updated & Changes to Athletic Master Plan Projects
Thanks for this info HuskieJohn. I still think they should scrap the south end zone seats and put that money toward the biggest, best video board they can get. Seats could always be added later if needed.

I also noticed the new plan doesn't mention the west side except for a reconfigured pressbox. Probably just a prioritization thing which is fine. The east side renovation is definitely most important to happen first.

I too agree that the South Endzone seats should be a lower priority than most of these other projects. I would like to see the East side structure with the premium seating where the students are still seated in the bleachers. Then have the center bleacher section reserved for only the most diehard students. I think that would help the atmosphere experience for the donors in the club seats while also making the stand look the best on TV.

I personally do not like the design on the West bowl as far as the team store location and it blocking the visiting team entrance. In regards to a bigger scoreboard I would like to see 2 smaller scoreboard added on the North side rather than just a larger one.

The West side is so far from being worked on, other than the press box/coaches box being expanded, that I firmly believe that by the time it comes to have money for the project that it will make more sense to demo it and rebuild with something more appropriate of our needs.

Didnt see anything mentioned. I know it was a plan back in 2012 to put it in 2014 but I am sure the IL state budget mess SNAFU'd that.

No idea. There are several different factors. Really though the additional 4 projects on top of the delay in starting the first one would more than likely INCREASE the amount needed.

That being said the smaller projects are much more obtainable with this crappy budget situation. Its a much better chance for a small win to help get momentum going.

Really I wouldn't mind seeing an online flash fundraising campaign for the Nutrition Center since they just got a $25k donation towards it on Wednesday.

Updated & Changes to Athletic Master Plan Projects
Do they have a plan to solicit donations tied to seats? In other words, if you donate say $1,000, would that go towards a premium seat? (However, see caveat in last paragraph.). It would be nuts to just plain donate only to pay more for season tickets plus the seat premium.

Also, will fans pay more for season tickets tied to the upgraded seats to attend one or two Saturday games a year?

Another crimp in the plan is the proposed tax reform. If it passes, donations tied to seats will no longer be tax deductible.

Ya even my small $300 donation for parking and endzone club seats wont be deductible so I am considering donating next years amount next week so I can at least count the deduction this year.

With that being said I am considering donating a bit specifically to the Nutrition Center since it appears they already have a chunk of money raised for this project already. HAF announced a $25k gift towards it yesterday.

Who donated the 25k?

As for the scoreboard, I'm with whoever said scrap the endzone seating and spend the money on a actual jumbo tron. Iowa state style and would fill the whole end zone making it feel more "bowl" style right away. Wouldn't mind seeing more of a permanent style fence along then endzone club till we get some actual funds for the reno.

All football alumni were told about the nutrition center about a month ago and donations were also asked for. I believe a majority, if not all money raised so far for the project have been raised by football alumni.

That was me. $10 million on seats that won't be used vs. that amount or maybe less on something that would have a dramatic effect on the gameday experience. Anyone who was at the Toledo game at The Cell knows what I'm talking about. I watched most of that game on the screen it was so incredible. Seats should be added when there's an actual reason to do so, not to make the stadium look nicer. If that were ever a reqirement to get into a bigger conference I'm sure it could be done quickly. Smaller stadiums are the future in this studio football world. It's no accident that the Frisco Bowl was just played in a soccer stadium that holds about 20K. Fewer seats, better amenities is the goal.

You are spot on 1981. With that said, bowling off the stadium should stay in the plan, just as a lower priority. You can always put a larger scoreboard above a small section of bowled off bleachers.

+1

1981...Great point about the 2016 Toledo game at The Cell/Guaranteed Rate field. Like most everyone , had decent seats yet still found myself watching the JumboTron screen. The size and clarity was really unbelieveable.

Nutrition Center
$250k
"Due to new NCAA legislation, we have the opportunity to provide nutritional support for our student-athletes more frequently, directly impacting their nutritional goals and athlete performance. Nutritional eating plans are essential for our student-athletes to train and compete at the highest level and we are committed to not only accommodate but advance the nutritional health of our 400+ student-athletes.
