Comments from Scott Vermillion, his Gate City coach:

He's not at all surprised

"He should be in the NBA in a few years.”

And this helps further brighten Georgetown's future:

Ewing lands a top big

Dean went for 40 and they still blew Wise out but that ends the dream for Gate City with him out.

Even with Ervin the Devils are not making it past Radford this year.

Who knows for sure? Without him they aren't doing anything. He had knee surgery a few days ago, doubt he will make it back

And for those who continue to doubt McClung could have played for Bucs, he just played at Madison Square Garden vs St Johns. He led Hoyas with 25 pts and tv guys kept raving about his game.

Who doubted? Did ETSU make an offer?

Some (a few) doubted that he was athletic enough to play for ETSU and yes they did they offer.

I remember them. Probably the best player that will ever play in Daniel Boone's gym.

Who doubted? Here are just a smattering of comments. There were others; don't need to dig them all up:

PreacherPurl:
"Don't see this as his last stop. So glad Forbes & Co. passed on him."

brock20:
"Big difference between playing against Lee High who has 5’11 post players vs Big East teams with 6’5 point guards. I think he is a nice player but based on most his offers and from other coaches he should be playing mid major next year. Omar Wattad was the best high school prospect from this area in the past 15 or so years and he had trouble getting minutes at Georgetown."

brock20:
"This kid is not Steph Curry. Come on, People are enamored with him because he is a white 5'10 kid that can dunk. Omar was a much better D1 prospect. He had the height and skill for the next level."
[and.......] "I think he could be a good player at the mid major level. At the power 5 level you not only have to have elite skill and work ethic, but most of the time you have to have won the genetic lottery as well. I know someone is going to point out so and so who was short but those are the exceptions, not the rule."

BucDoctor:
"I think he made a decent choice, I don't see him as quick enough to play at ETSU. I'm a wait and see person on him, but never the less..."

ekxixis1984:
"He made his choice, wish him the best of luck, and that should be the end of the discussion, unless we create a whole new section of the forum called "the could-have beens and where are they now?"

I still don’t think he is that great. I’m not alone. He shoots a horrible percentage, has lots of turnovers and not an great defender. He had 2 major offers out of high school. They are giving him a chance to succeed so it looks like he will put up lots of points and highlights. In the process Georgetown will continue to be an average big east team. He would have been a very good mid major player. That is where every division 1 coach but 2 thought he should be at.

The number of things you have said wrong on here would fill a book. I don’t have time to go back and look up your thoughts on guys like Benny Lufille and Julian Walters but your takes on here are bad and always have been.

What!? What are you talking about? I hardly had on opinion on Lufile. I bet I didn't mention him more than half a dozen times. Maybe something like "it'd be nice to see what he could do", or something like that - but I was NOT a huge Lufile advocate. I don't know who you're confusing me with on that. And I'm the one who *repeatedly* pointed out the slow and low release on Walters's shot. (Which is not to say I didn't like him in some other ways.) I think most posters on this board were higher on him than I was. Walters might have eventually been successful here - had there been a guard or two less he had to compete against.

Have I been wrong on some things here and there? Of course. And I certainly don't mind admitting them when that happens. This is a discussion board after all, with opinions and theories, etc. all over the place. But I don't put words in others' mouths. Quite the opposite, in fact - which is why I took the time to post all those quotes.

You may not be "alone" in thinking he's not that great, but I think your colleagues in that camp are dwindling down. The Big East coaches seem to like him, John Thompson "loves" him; Ewing obviously loves him a lot; the tv commentators go ga-ga over him. Millions of people who see his youtube dunk videos love him (altho I know that doesn't carry much weight). No, he isn't the best shooter in the world, but he's gotten A LOT better after missing his first 15 or so attempts this year. He's actually hit 16 out of his last 41 from deep. And he's shooting in the vicinity of 50% (maybe not quite) overall the last 6 games. But as I said earlier, he's more a "disruptor" than anything else. He's brings lots of intangibles, and headaches, to the oppostion. Why do you think he's been starting all year? While I thought perhaps his D might be his weak spot, he's been at least adequate - better than I thought, actually. And he had more than 2 major offers out of high school. I have already corrected you on that previously. But since you've apparently forgotten..........he got offers from Rutgers, Georgetown, Seton Hall, BC, College of Charleston, Air Force, ETSU, Chatt, Hofstra, Duquesne, Kent St., Marshall, Murray St., ODU, Yale, Rice, and I think that's enough, even tho there's even more. Maybe you'll remember some of them from now on.

No, I'm not saying he's Steph Curry; I'm not saying McClung will be able to play in The League, but I am saying he's athletic enough. But it takes much more than that. I *am* saying he's more than capable of playing, and starting, in the Big East as a freshman, and anyone paying attention must say the same thing - because it' clearly reality.

Nor did I say that. I think he would have been valuable in spots, yes. He clearly won us a game last year before departing; that's beyond dispute. But he had "issues" that I'm not at liberty to talk about, and knew before he left the team that he likely wouldn't fit in long-term. I had *hoped* that he could, but it was too big of an adjustment.

Nope, McClung isn't any good, Ewing has just continued to start him because he is stubborn and doesn't want to admit he was wrong giving the kid a scholarship.
All the other Big East coaches and announcers are just praising him so Ewing will keep playing it.
lmao.

All the other big east coaches had a chance to offer him a scholarship and didn’t.

His offer list out of high school was that of a good mid major prospect like say Kevin Easley (Easley had a better offer list but I would still say similar).

I am definitely being a “hater”. I can see why people like watching him but it’s just not my style. He shoots a lot, turns it over a lot, not many assists and not great defense.

His numbers are improving as the season goes along but I am curious.
30 turnovers (to go with 35 assists and 12 steals) in 17 games is a lot?

Unless it’s changed recently, he is the leading freshman scorer in the Big East. Let that sink in. He would have been a star as a Buc and talk about filling FH with fans.

Maybe not a fair comparison but for giggles and … let's compare McClung and Good.

Remember Good has been playing through an injury that will probably require surgery at the end of this season. McClung missed 4 games with an injury. I didn't have time to convert some of these stats to per minutes played stats and that would even them up a bit, except shooting percentages which are not dependent on minutes played.

Minutes per game Good 29, Mc 26
Field Goal Percentage Good .435 Mc .401
PPG Good 12.3 Mc 13.2
3pt Percentage Good .418 Mc .274
Steals Good 25 Mc 14
Assists Good 52 Mc 43
Free Throw % Good .846 Mc .761
Rebounds Good 55 Mc 50
Turnovers Good 27 Mc 35
Fouls Good 26 Mc 33

If McClung is fantastic, how great is Good?

Flame away...

Good's freshman year stats @ Appy state
games played 29
Minutes 22.6
FG% .417
PPG 7.0
3pt % .410,
Steals Good 18 0.6 average
Assists 45 - 2.7 average
Free Throw % 78.3 & but only 18-23 McClung is currently 56-72
Rebounds 67 2.3 Rebounds same average at ETSU this year McClung is averaging 2.7
Turnovers 23 0.8 average
Fouls 53 average 1.8 average , McClung average 1.75

Comparing a Redshirt Sophmore playing in the conference ranked 14th in the NET rankings to the true freshman in the 5th ranked Conference ETSU SOS 180 vs Georgetown 83. Yeah seems fair hmmm

I think we can all agree McClung and Good are both exceptional talents. I watched both play in high school and so far in college. Watched McClung play today vs Butler. He was leading scorer for both teams and made some huge shots. He also missed two driving layups at end of game that were tough shots but missed them nonetheless. For Ewing to trust him to even take those shots says a lot.

As for Good, I would totally want him with ball in his hands or to take a late game three with game on the line. This whole McClung debate started with some on this board saying he was too slow, etc it play in SoCon. That is completely wrong as he is proving his worth in a Big East. He most likely will be Big East freshman of year. To have Ivy League school offers speaks to his classroom ability. It’s well known he chose Georgetown for its pre law program. I for one would have loved to see him as a Buc and I think Forbes would tell you same thing.

Also it goes without saying that if McClung had came to ETSU that FH would sell out with Fire Marshall turning fans away.

That shouldn't play any factor in recruiting a kid, if he isn't good enough to play his fans are going to get mad and stop coming if he doesn't play.

Him attracting fans is just an intangible. He would play well if gym full or empty. I saw Forbes at several GC games scouting/recruiting him so no secret he wanted him.
