Hah. Yeah, 90% of the greatest WRs ran 4.5 or better. I guess AJ Green, Dez Bryant, Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald and all the other 4.5+ guys are just the outliers.

Green and Fitzgerald ran 4.48. Bryant a 4.52. Rice 4.59. Bolden is really the only outlier at 4.7. Both carter and rice ran their 40s in a day when athletes didn't train for the 40 like they do now. The 40 isn't a perfect measure of speed. Just a general guide. And players succeed on other things like size(green, fitz)quickness(Welker), precision(largent), strength (Bolden), etc. what would rice or carter be like
If they ran 4.3?

And here I thought you knew what you were talking about. Rice never ran a 4.59, his best ever was a 4.63 and that is coming from his mouth. And to further that, it was in the day they didn't time electronic. Let's just admit it, speed is overrated compared to quickness and explosive power. You best route runners are in that 4.6 range.

Come on man seriously! Speed is overrated? How come every coach in America always talks about the biggest advantage is speed. Either side of the ball. I'll assume they know what's important.

As always people only read what they want to. If you read the whole sentence, "speed is overrated compared to quickness and explosive power. I'm sure coaches would take quickness and explosive power more than 40 speed. That was my statement!!

"Jerry Rice timed in 4.59 and was considered to have marginal speed for a starting NFL wide receiver by virtually everyone in the NFL. There were three or four teams -- including the Jets and the Cowboys along with the 49ers -- who rated him very highly. Other than that, I'm not sure anybody did, simply because of a 4.59 time."

Who knows where you got this but I will take Jerry's word over Bill Walsh. People, including coaches are always misinformed on these times. I will take it from the horses mouth. But in the end, who really cares!!!

Honestly, I could find nothing that says rice himself considered 4.63 his 40 time. Where did you see that? 4.71 gets the biggest hit, but there are articles explaining that number was his combine time. Then at his pro day he ran 4.59. The Cowboys GM Gil Brandt, who was highly considering drafting Rice, is quoted as having timed him multiple times and his best was 4.55. For what it's worth--7 of the top 10 wide receivers by yards in 2017 ran sub 4.5. The other 3 ran 4.51,.52 and .58.

Not every WR needs to run 4.4. Slot guys need to be quicker than fast. But it's nice to have one guy on the outside who can put fear into the secondary.

This goes back to my point. Laser vs Stop Watch. Combine time (LASER) was 4.71; ProDay Time (Stop Watch) 4.59. Laser is always a slower time. This is why you see many players skip the 40 at the combine but then get timed in the 40 at their pro day!

The combine was hand timed until 1990. Rice participated in combine in 1985.

Even Jyran Mitchell's track "speed" is 11.28 in the 100. That's good. Really good. But not special when it comes to just speed. Now he may become a great player and can still out run most defenders., I'm just referring to the guys who get one step on the defense and you can say---he's gone---No ones going to catch him. If you run sub 11 in the 100, there's almost no one on who can catch you.

And if you have zero agility or limited football skills it won’t matter unless you run “go routes” 100% of the time, and teams will catch on instantly. See Oakland Raiders for example.....Derrius Heyward-Bey ring a bell? Elite track speed, terrible route runner and still couldn’t create separation with all that speed.

Well aware this is not the 80's my friend but this is not a guess. Pro Days ARE done by hand held watches NOT laser, thus the FASTER times (at Pro Days) and sometimes
are even done by college coaches (ie know who is doing the timing and what method is being used)

Here are two articles (from 2016 and 2017) that back this up....

I've been really wondering if Rod limits how much coach u can actually change the playbook because basically everything is identical to whenhe was the OC just less bubble screens. Coach U tho does call a bad game a lot. No rhyme or reason with the sequence of play calls and seems to call some of the worst play calls when they get some momentum going early in a drive be.
