Stihl Basketball Classic
Hey, have you heard about this season opening basketball classic at the Ted? Don't worry, nobody has, not even Stihl. That doesn't mean I don't have a great idea!

All this Norfolk State talk got me to thinking. Why not something like this to kick off every season. Four teams, always ODU and could rotate Norfolk State and Hampton, then have a Mason, William and Mary, Richmond, UVA , VCU, Tech or whoever else. (UVA and Tech may never come who knows but money sometimes talks). We would always play the biggest name first day.

Stihl Virginia Tip-Off Basketball Classic. The days of the old Kiwanis Classic are over. Indiana is not coming here. But this could work.

I'd enjoy it!!! Always wanted a tournament with all the D1 schools in Virginia.

Didn't the VA Governor try and do this (in RVA, not the Ted)? UVA, VCU, GMU and ODU? Something like that. Maybe VT was involved too. We got to play UVA out of it (and beat them! One of our 5 wins that season). Then it died I guess.

Not died, discontinued. [Due to a change in governors -- from a corrupt stooge, who at least cared about basketball, to a flimflam artist who does not.]

But, back on point, EXCELLENT suggestion mac! I would love to see something like that at the Ted. I would still be delighted, albeit only slightly less enthusiastic about traveling for it, if the schools involved decided it should be a rotating-host basis.

Doesn't Philadelphia have a similar arrangement for their local powerhouse basketball programs?

A Virginia basketball tournament would be good for the state and good for basketball. Just need to make sure the ACC teams agree.

Yes, it's called the Big 5: Penn, Villanova, LaSalle, St. Joe's and Temple. They used to play each other throughout the season at The Palestra, the Fenway Park of basketball gyms on Penn's campus. It's not the same as it was in the 70s and 80s, or before the Big East, but my god the hoops were awesome.

Ok my friend. Mac's tournament is now called:

Stihl Old Dominion Classic.

Wish Fred Whyte, former CEO of Stihl was still alive, I would ask him myself about this. He was awesome and was a rector at ODU. But maybe someone at ODU will see this and think about this idea.

On twitter, a couple of weeks ago some people came up with a rotating, 8-team D-M-V tournament.

That excel sheet reminded me of one small detail - VT and UVA can't play each other OOC. I guess that would be the only snag in this plan, if they were to participate.

I was thinking just Virginia teams and it being the first game of the season for ODU. It would be good for ODU and good for the whole state, IMO .

RE: Stihl Basketball Classic
I don't think this is going to be a tournament since we already take part in OOC tournament every year. So this is going to be more of a 1-day game series with 4 to 5 matches that day. Maybe, instead of just hosting it in Norfolk, we could actually move the location from Norfolk, to Richmond to DC year by year. Teams like JMU, ODU, VCU, Richmond could be permanent members and then add 2-4 more spots for an invitation from nearby schools.

If hosted in Norfolk, we could add NSU or even send invitations to VTech or UVA, if Richmond or DC, send inv to Liberty. In fact, I think we can add liberty as a permanent member too along with GMU if they are willing to join in. Or maybe even Vtech and UVA if they agree.

Matchups should be based on current rpi's no matter which conference you belong to. The tournament should be held after 70% of OOC games are done. Let the first 2 rpi teams be matched with each other and be the last game of the day. The ****** rpi's should be the first game. So even if you lose, it doesn't hurt you much. Moving tournament within the state can also help gain better sponsors IMO for a long contract. This should be made into a tradition so every year fans get to see quality teams from Virginia play on 1 stage. And maybe other schools could gain following from local areas too.

Since stadiums won't be jam-packed(except for local schools), give tickets to local middle school and high school basketball teams ( or and their families) for them to witness the games and learn something about college basketball.

Is the Palestra still open? I'd love to take in a game there.

lol yes
It's Penn's home arena and the current host of the Ivy League Tournament. I think George Mason has played a home and home recently.

It's fun for the history (I went to last year's Ivy Tournament semis)
