WBB Game's 11 and 12: Las Vegas Hoops Classic
On Thursday the ODU women's basketball team plays in the LV Holiday Hoops Classic at the South Pointe Hotel and Casino. We were here last in 2014-15 when we went 2-0. This year we will play the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and the Abilene Christian Wildcats.

Oakland is part of the Horizon League. Oakland University is located in SE Michigan. (not to be confused with Oakland, CA ---long time baseball fan) RPI wise they are ranked 148, SOS 186. Schedule so far.
Vs Illinois St W 64-63 Record: 4-5 RPI: 273
@ Michigan St L 63-95 Record: 8-3 RPI: 42
@ Northwestern L 70-88 Record: 6-7 RPI: 158
Vs Niagara W 67-59 Record: 2-8 RPI: 225
@ Michigan L 69-78 Record: 10-2 RPI: 28
@ Canisius W 79-77 Record: 2-7 RPI: 255
Vs Cent Michigan L 85-103 Record: 7-2 RPI: 73
Vs Um-Dearborn W 104-44 (non-Div One team, does not count in RPI)
@ Cornell W 79-77 Record: 2-7 RPI: 323
Vs ODU Record: 1-9 RPI: 314

Golden Grizzlies Starting Five.
#03 Cierra Bond 5'10" G Sr 11.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.7 spg, 40.2 FG%, 37.0 3P%, 81.3 FT%, 24.4 mpg
#05 Sha'Keya Graves 5'9" G Rs Sr 15.1 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.9 spg, 46.4 FG%, 37.5 3P%, 64.0 FT%, 26.9 mpg
#2 Nikita Telesford 6'2" F Rs So 4.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.4 bpg, 45.2 FG%, 56.0 Ft%, 19.9 mpg
#22 Taylor Gleason 5'8" G Rs Sr 12.0 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 6.1 apg, 3.0 spg, 41.2 FG%, 36.2 3P%, 84.6 FT%, 34.2 mpg
#23 Leah Somerfield 6'1" F Sr 10.9 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 0.9 apg, 46.7 FG%, 47.1 3P%, 57.1 Ft%, 27.9 mpg
Key Bench
#10 Taylor Jones 5'8" G Jr 11.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.4 apg, 33.0 FG%, 26.7 3P%, 65.8 FT%, 24.9 mpg

It's a guard heavy line-up that likes to run, and one out of every three shot is a three point attempt. Gleason is the key, averaging 6.1 apg. She drives the offense. And they spread the ball, with five players averaging double digits that makes it tough becuase you can't single out one or two players to guard. It has to be a complete team effort.

Inside the Numbers........
.................OAK.....ODU
PPG..........76.0........53.3
OPPG.......70.6........68.3
FG%.........42.2.......36.4
3P%........36.2........30.9
3MPG.....8.0...........6.8
FT%........64.8........56.2
FTMPG...12.9........7.7
RPG........37.1........31.1
ORPG.....41.4.......37.4
APG.......16.1........11.8
TPG.......15.3.........14.8
SPG.......11.7..........6.1
BPG.......5.0............1.9
Ast/TO ratio: Oak: 1.1 ODU: 0.8

Because Oakland played a game where they scored over 100 points against a non-D-I team, there overall numbers are slightly inflated. I think this might be a better game between the two teams than the numbers indicate. With that said, it's going to be tough with the loss of Jessica Munoz. I always liked her. She was one of those players whose value didn't always show up in the stats. Playing solid defense and making the extra pass is important. Doesn't get you glory, but it gets you playing time.

True about Munoz. She was on the floor a lot. Not high numbers, rebounding or scoring, but she seemed to play smart and hard. I wish her the best.

Final score, Oakland 80, ODU 59 Freshman Victoria Morris leads the Monarchs with 20 points thanks to 5-for-14 from the 3 point line. Oigbokie had 15 points (9 at the half) and 8 boards. Jackson gave us 11 points. ODU had 21 turnovers (most in the 1st half) that Oakland scored 19 points off. That pretty much did us in.

RE: WBB Game's 11 and 12: Las Vegas Hoops Classic
Abilene Christian (ACU) is a member of the Southern Conference. Located in Abilene, Texas. The Wildcats have what I would call two records. Before they play Radford on Thursday, they are 5-3 overall. However against D-I teams they are 1-3. So against non-D-I teams they are a perfect 4-0.

The Wildcats are coached by Julie Goodenough. This is her fifth year and under her coaching, they made the transition from a D-2 school to a D-1 school. Last year they went 23-9 and went to the 2nd round of the WNIT tournament.

Wildcats Scchedule So far. RPI: 245. SOS: 89
Vs Southwest W 91-47 non D-1, no RPI.
Vs Schreiner W 97-48 non D-1, no RPI.
Vs Idaho W 82-72 Record: 3-7 RPI: 209
@ SMU L 44-65 Record: 5-6 RPI: 183
@ Arkansas L 65-79 Record: 8-3 RPI: 61
vs FGCU L 55-94 Record: 9-3 RPI: 22
vs Howard Payne W 88-46 non D-1, no RPI.
Vs Midwestern St W 88-67 non D-1, no RPI.

Full disclosure. I have never seen a team play so many non-division teams in a regular season. Part of it might be due to the fact that they recently made the transition to D-1 and they might have teams under contract, FGCU is one of the better mid-major programs in the country. Currently ranked number 3 in the top 25 for mid major from college insider. W&M is ranked 23....

ACU's starting Five
#22 Sierra AllenF/ C 6'1" Sr 4.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 0.9 apg, 33.3 FG%, 22.2 3P%, 25.0 FT%, 17.1 mpg
#03 Dominique Golightly G/F 5'11" So 13.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.0 bpg, 43.3 FG%, 39.7 3P%, 50.0 FT%, 29.5 mpg
#10 Breanna Wright G 5'8" So 10.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.9 apg, 41.1 FG%, 27.3 3P%, 81.8 Ft%, 31.1 mpg
#12 Josie Larson G 5'9" Fr 6.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 0.9 apg, 40.0 Fg%, 37.1 3P%, 75.0 FT%, 13.1 mpg
#11 Sara Williamson G 12.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.3 apg, 43.4 FG%, 29.4 3P%, 65.5 FT%, 27.9 mpg
Key Bench
#25 Lexi Kirgan C 6'4" So 5.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.7 apg, 53.6 Fg%, 63.6 FT%, 13.6 mpg

I'm not going to show you ACU's stats. Honestly...when you play half of your schedule against non division one teams, you will get some stats that are very misleading. However the Wildcats are built on two things. Rebounding and three point shooting. They average 45.4 rpg and have given up 33.4. But they also average 10.1 3's a game that they MAKE. Literally 45% overall shots are three point attempts. Every player on the roster has made at least one three point attempt. So if you like the three ball, this might the game for you.

Normally I would say ODU would have the advantage. But the Wildcats have 10 players who play 10 minutes or more. They shuffle players in and out. ODU has 9 healthy bodies and will be coming off a game less than 24 hours. So this will be a battle and I think a lot of threes will be shot in this game....

Wouldn't our outlook on life be much more positive if we just didn't mention the lady Monarchs again until October 2018?

I hope our new coach can handle a few years of losing and really wants to build a winning program again. She can make it happen.
