Just goes to show everyone what FBS level coaches, with a few key transfers, and a highly rated recruiting class can do. FAU was a mid-level program like ODU. They aimed high and shot through the roof. Many here are happy with 12-14 rated recruiting classes, FCS level coaches, and the status quo. There was NO reason ODU could not have done the same. You are either going to act and spend like an FBS level program or go back to FCS.
Do we have the same amount of money to be spending on coaches like that? I don't know what the numbers look like but it seems money is tight right now

Yes we do.....Money is not the issue. We had the money to give BW a nice raise last year and well as the asst. coaches plus 2 year contracts. Money is not an excuse. FAU coaches are FBS level and know how to recruit. If ODU does not have the money then we should have NEVER moved to FBS. I just hope all these graduates over the last 15 years are starting to step up with donations because if they don't the old guard donations are starting to diminish.

I didn't say fire but I certainly would not have given him a contract renewal and more $ last year. Nor would have given asst. coaches raises and 2 year contracts. You could see we would would struggle this year and we have not been competitive at all against decent teams. Wood got snowed and screwed by BW. Now...if BW and this staff don't go Bowling next year and finish in the top 3 of CUSA....it is time for a change.

ODU's new contract with BW is $650,000
Lane Kiffin's original contract was just under $1M
I still don't buy it that we have the money to pay coaches when we are still trying to build the facilities to be in FBS. I think one comes before the other. And ODU was promised a different cash flow when they moved to FBS compared to what it is now. What's done is done. I don't think we can afford to do what you are suggesting.

For comparisons sake, Wilder gets $650k annually, Kiffin got $950k annually before his extension (will be well over $1 million now)

You say we could have done the same, question the logic behind not having done it and then admit you wouldnt have fired him? Just a pile of contradictions.
As for next year, I agree. If they don't go bowling next season, it would mean 4 out of the last 5 seasons were mediocre to bad and it is time to move on. Just hope we have the resources to do so.
Perhaps we can follow WKUs model and hire a disgraced talented coach who needs to rebuild their brand. Hugh Freeze comes to mind.

I agree. We have a lot of infrastructure needs other schools have already taken care of. FAU played a bowl game in their own stadium ( that did not look to bad by the way).

Nothing like a little overreaction. Which transfers or true freahman make an impact? What is FAUs recruting class ranked for next year?
FAU had a fine season. I doubt they are some budding dynasty. The pieces fell in place this uear not too dissimilar to how they did for us last year. Lets see how good they are moving forward before annointing them; all they did is beat a bunch of CUSA teams.

I do enjoy the Kiffin and FAU story "a coach with odd humor/underdog program". Watching them play is like playing the video game ncaa football.
Blaine Taylor's salary was in the 750k to 800k ballpark. I'm sure we could afford to play up for a coach that could bring the excitement Kiffin did to the FAU program. Heard somewhere that student applications for enrollment went up 30% to 40% since Kiffin arrived. If the success continues and he stays 10 years I see him alone credited with building the football culture down there.

This is the truth. I'm not saying BW will definitely turn out to be a great coach at this level, but I don't see how anyone can honestly try to compare Kiffin recruiting in that beauty vs what Bobby is selling. And no matter how much we pay, they still have to bring recruits (with choices) to visit that crap building and when they see it, it turns some kids around. Can recruiting against FAU be a serious question right now?

FAU was a mid level program like us and struggled to recruit until a REAL FBS coach came in and got the ball rolling. Either ODU steps up and starts investing and acting like an FBS program or go back to FCS.

Did you watch the game against us? This was a team that we were equal to, I'd say actually better than, the last three years.
THEN Kiffin was hired and they came to Norfolk at TOTALY TOOK ODU TO THE WOODSHED. Then they beat pretty much everyone else the same way.
Their level of play FAR exceeded us this year and I'm afraid will continue to do so as long as they keep Kiffin around, maybe even longer.

It was just an example of the type of coach that is attainable and practically guaranteed to win instantly and raise our profile. But Freeze, Broderick would never approve his hiring.

RE: Lane Kiffin for a Decade
Some of it is the combination Briles and Kiffin offense and their video game play calling. About 3 weeks in they realized they didn't have the personnel to out-talent anyone...so they decided to out-run them instead. Run 100 plays a game, that keeps the D basic, spread out and tired, then before they adjust, hit them with a well designed play that busts them wide open. Sprinkle in a few "last chance" transfers and you see what you get.
They'll still be good next year, but I don't think they'll blow through everyone either. They caught a lot of teams with their pants down, I don't think that happens as much next year.
Problem for FAU is... you still get a 3/4 empty stadium at a conference championship game; and not much better at a HOME bowl game.

I would rather have ODU step up and catch FAU than to have FAU fall back to where we are. Let's hope they keep him around and remain a good team.
