Another note, the rosters have been updated with the newly signed players and seniors have been removed. Tyler Lyle listed as a fullback with the departure of Robinson. Bo Bell the RB from Lumen Christi listed now.

Vinnie Patreri, the kicker from Saline, will indeed be joining as a PWO. Sadie says he wants to sign in Feb., which I take to mean another school could still lure him away. No public comment from Whitmer, so yeah, he's probably heading to Louisville or somewhere else.

Whitmer just unpinned his EMU official visit pics on Twitter.

He had previously deleted posts indicating he had committed to us.

The question to me is did we have a real numbers problem for mid-year transfers and were we unable to give him a scholarship for spring semester?

There seems to have been a lot happening recently with mid-years JUCO transfers. Two popped up at the last minute (the two defensive players).

Steve, I doubt we have a numbers problem. The staff is not going to let a player like Whitmer walk, given all the time we've spent recruiting him, because of a lack of scholarships. We're not Bama, but there is always dead roster weight, and coaches can get pretty creative when roster spots are needed.

That's odd, heard he quit. Also looks like Andrews back at TE on roster. He was a Dlineman, flipped to an emergency TE early in the season when we had none, then went back to DL.

Think he flipped?

But remember, a coach can not manufacturer a 2017/8 scholarship. There has to be a scholarship which was unused for the PAST semester/academic year (say July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018).

Then that scholarship could be given to any recruit starting school in January.

Apparently a lot of mid-year transfer JUCOs out there and we got our share but scholarships given out are 2017 scholarships (for one semester) + 2018 (full academic year 2018/9).

Its a wide open race for the starting QB spot. That'll deserve it's own thread sooner or later.

Exactly. Never heard anybody say that Jackson could 'really spin the ball.' Haha

I don't follow high school ball, but I didn't think Jackson had a good senior season.

Meh. Fleck did the same and they dropped off big time with Lester at the helm. If Creighton can keep EMU in the Top 5 going forward we'll be able to compete with anybody.

MAC is mostly about finding the 2/3 star kids and then providing the proper coaching and development.

E'Tough, what I think happened to WMU last year is that they had a very good class verballed but lost much of it after the Fleck left.

They seem to be back on track very strong this year.

Last year was as anomaly, because Fleck left. If he hadn't left they might not have missed a beat.

What CC is doing is building steadily. Nothing terribly flashy but steady and improving everything about the program from the talent, culture, aura and marketing, now facilities, etc.

RE: 2017 Football Early Signing Day Thread
I'm sorry I haven't been active as much recruiting wise but I've had a horrible cold between Thanksgiving and now. Thanks to many of you for picking up the slack and keeping everyone updated.

Ken Barna went to a luncheon with CC speaking who said they thought they would sign 19 in the 2018 class and all would be signed at the early signing day.

Think if the 3 verbals signed yesterday we would have 19 at the early signing day.

If Mackey enrolls in January (greyshirt) he should count against the 2018 class.

Recall there is a way to have JUCOs when they enroll in January can count backward to the 2017 class IF they're were any open scholies in the 2017 class.

If players department after this current semester that would open some scholies but probably not until the February signing date.

Grissom apparently is in school but maybe not on scholarship for this semester, he too may be on scholarship starting in January 2018 and then be on the roster. He could then participate in spring practice if academically eligible.

Re WR we may see some position shifts to build depth. That would not surprise me-wait to see spring ball.

We are a bit short at the WR position, I'm surprised we're only signing two offensive linemen an I would like us to sign a high school TE to redshirt. I agree we're getting close to the limit so I don't expect to see many other signings for 2018 maybe one or two.

The MAC West is cleaning the MAC East's clock recruiting wise for 2018. We did well this year but so did WMU, Toledo, Ball St., NIU. if the ranking are any indication. I believe we rely on JUCOs more than other MAC schools.

Can we start a new 2019 recruiting thread?

Best wishes to all of your families and you this holiday season.

RE: 2017 Football Early Signing Day Thread
Thanks and be well, '79:

Some of this is repetitious so excuse me for it:

CC could have given out 2017 (2017/8 academic year) or 2018 (2018/9 academic year scholarships) according to calculated available scholarships yesterday. We presume to know that the mid-year JUCO transfers got 2017 scholarships, but this is a presumption.

We don't know how many available 2017 scholarships CC saved (from Jones, Grissom, Mackey, and others as kids sometimes leave the program in spring or summer) but gave one out to Jaron Johnson.

So for players IN SCHOOL, CC can offer them 2017 scholarships. Presumably Grissom is in this category.

CC indicated that say 8 of his recruits would enter at mid-year. My guess is that, as '79 indicates, a few might be gray shirts. Mackey could be one. the kid Giordano could be another). Grayshirt means they pay their own way Spring semester and become a 2018 signee with a 2018 scholarship. I believe Aaron Jackson will be a mid-year enrollee. As his signing was announced I assume he is on 2017 scholarship BUT I wouldn't bet money on it.

A mid-year JUCO transfer signee counts back to the 2017 scholarship total and does not count toward the 2018 scholarship totals. Just refreshing: CC can give out to the LESSER of 25 NEW 2018 scholarships (that does NOT count mid-year JUCOs taking a 2017 scholarship) OR 85 TOTAL scholarships.

Just remember the numbers can get crazy. For example, School X can give out say 5 saved 2017 scholarships to mid-year JUCO transfers. Maybe a few gray shirts. Maybe up to a MAX of new 2018 scholarships.

A school can easily if the numbers work out, can add 25, 30 or even more new players through all of these machinations.

Charles Gadie wrote on twitter that he didn't want to sign yesterday because he wanted to be patient. Then he said EMU pulled the offer so he decommitted.

I heard part of CC discussion last night. The two JUCO DEs visited last weekend and the staff thought they'd have to decide between them even though they wanted both. I guessing that Whitmer decommited somewhere in there and opened a schollie.

From reading Wooden's post and LJM's it does sound like we have a numbers problem. I can't recall that happening before. Generally EMU has not pulled an offer once given.

'79, need to remember the dynamics of signing day is different this year.

Some recruits may have wavered and said, "I would rather sign during the February signing period."

With the single signing period in the past, you wouldn't get someone saying, "I'd rather wait and sign later..."

I assume the scholarship offer was pulled after the recruit indicated he didn't want to sign yesterday.

That is a far cry from when a coach would commit to a recruit and then pull the offer to give to someone else, simply because they liked the other prospect better.

RE: 2017 Football Early Signing Day Thread
There is a valuable lesson (or two) to be learned from Sutton Smith (NIU - DE).

1). Apparently he was hurt when at the Alabama camp.

2). He is not tall and not big, either for a DE, 6'1" 230. But the lesson is that lack of size can be a detriment yet coaching staffs have to guess which ones can make it despite their lack of size or project to a different position.

I wonder if a lot of coaches missed out on Rush, who is short, 6' 1", for a DE, but looks like a player to me. As we sometimes hear with running backs, "He's not small, just short." 6' 1", 260 isn't small. I suspect if he was a few inches taller he'd had a lot of P5 offers.
