RE: Norfolk State
Who would think we could win a game on free throw shooting? So, there's that. NSU played with more energy and focus, until the end, when things started to get scattered for them. They looked like they wanted it more. It turned out to be the "check out" game Ted and Dave talked about at the end of the last game and before this one. It looked like the strategy was to foul Porter every time he took a shot. He got hammered on every shot. Fortunately, a few still went in and he hit free throws! Thank God it was a win and let us NEVER cross the threshold to the Scope, again. It is just barely a step up from the brown dump in Richmond.

Playing Charlotte in the next game probably won't help it any either.

We were getting destroyed at the rim and the refs weren't calling anything. Norfolk State hit some prayers. Randy was the reason we won that game. His defense is so far ahead of what Baker was. I see some notes about him not being a good shooter again. Try being the guy that is taking these shots at the end of the shot clock. His shots were contested and out of rhythm. He spends all of his energy on the defensive end being a team player, ultimately leading to his decline in shooting. We are very lucky to have Randy Haynes back this year. Everyone saying he needs to stop shooting...put a lid on it!!! How about telling Jones to give him a breather so he can get his legs under him? He will find his shot as he moves throughout the season. NEVER PLAY ANOTHER GAME AT SCOPE!!! Always wear those uniforms.
Agree on Randy H. Our front court was getting mauled the entire game (including a shot to the pistachios for Brandon). Caver napped for all of the first half and much of the second. It was Randy, Porter's foul shooting and a few inconsistent flashes from BJ that kept us in that game.
Disagree on spurning future games in Scope. No, it is not the Ted. The acoustics suck. The seating arrangement is weird. The parking is annoying. But that was still a very strong turn out from both fan bases for a pre-Christmas weekend game. I suspect it would have been just as bad, and perhaps even worse, at the Ted.
I root strongly for ODU to realize all of its potential as a powerhouse program. But I hope we never get so big and successful that we decide we are above the need to act like a good neighbor. It is, after all, just a game.

Randy is a good player. He's a good distributor, can shoot inside the 3 point line, finish at the rim, limit turnovers, and play good defense.
Randy played really good defense last night and that’s why Jeff stayed strong with him. Randy really struggled on the offense event of the floor for most of the night but he locked down Norfolk State, especially when we went to the zone. He came up with a couple big steals that made a huge impact on the game.

I said it before and will say it again. Stop scheduling all MEAC games. I remember when Twardzik played back when the ODU ...Norfolk State games were a lot of fun and very exciting but that was a long time ago. Last night was a no win, ugly,BS game. Oh! Did I mention UGLY.

Yikes, dropped to 94 RPI. To be expected. It'll go down further after Charlotte win or lose.

It’s really a shame because Charlotte is a great program but has fallen on hard times.

But, this is also why the NCAA selection committee has said that RPI is not going to be a big factor going forward in at-large selections. It’s just not a great measure of how good a team is. Now, of course, they will use it if it allows them to select a P5 program over a midmajor, but otherwise, it won’t count much.

It's cool that we dropped 40 points, and out of at large range though, cuz we were good neighbors.

Two unrelated observations: (1) I always enjoy listening to the NS band - they are most impressive, and (2) our crowd is too quiet during a game. I try to cheer loud, but when I look around - it feels like the people around me are watching a tennis match or are about to fall asleep. The impact a crowd can have on a team is huge.

Well Indiana State and Dayton turned into duds. Even VCU and Temple wouldn't have been great resume wins. The way I see it is we have 1 chance for a quality win against MTSU. With the way the committee has been selecting teams over the past 5 years, we would have had to finish the season with 1-2 losses to get an at-large. It is what it is, but the old regime that put a premium on RPI waz actually helpful to our cause. The NIT team a few years back likely would have gotten a bid 10 years ago, for example.

So true - I’m to the point where I root for us to win the regular season so that we at least get the automatic bid to the NIT. I know the big dance is the gold standard, but I really enjoyed the NIT games at the Ted a couple of years ago.

Did anyone else notice NS was gassed with six mins to go? You could tell they didn’t have a final push in them.

for sure, every time they played it seemed like they were trying to blow the players off the court. they got some kids that can wail in that group. they play some pretty fresh tunes too, we should probably ditch some of the corny music that we play, "sweet caroline" .. who needs to hear that song for the 15 millionth time

I understand your frustration. It's hard being the only one with the correct opinion about what is right and proper for ODU men's basketball.

Jeff has said publicly that this will not happen again. He has no interest in playing Norfolk State. Monarchblue is for once agreeing with Jeff Jones. It's a Christmas miracle!!!!
