Has Gowdy always been Republican? I know he clerked for a Carter-appointed federal judge, and was assistant US Atty in the Clinton Admin.

There could be other explanations, but I wonder if he switched parties at some point.

Years ago you had to be a Democrat. A conservative or liberal democrat but a Democrat. The primary was all that matrered.
