Also skeeching down Russell Road.

We actually played football on the field at Huskie Stadium. Back then it was easy to get on the field. We even brought beer and kept them in the snow. Could not get away with that nowadays...

Back in the 70s there were pickup football and baseball games every weekend at Huskie Stadium. It got real hot on the Astro Turf. Like you said, no way that happens today.

RE: List a "winter" memory you have while you were at NIU
Our fraternity had a "Christmas Crew" which was 10 or so guys who stayed up during break (most of us had jobs in Dekalb or on campus). We played way too much poker, watched a lot of Christmas movies, ate a LOT of pizza nuggets. We always hosted a new years party for the guys who went home for break and we always used to go out into the country and "get" a Christmas tree.

Building a snowman in the street by Lucenda and Russel Rd, then my buddy running it over with his car. Merry Christmas.

I remember once trying to negotiate the icy stairs of death leading to that little courtyard next to the library. It looked like it would be a convenient shortcut, but BEWARE! Later, the university would rope it off in the winter time.

mid 90's classes were never canceled, the school would just say take the buses. Yeah, 20,000+ can fit on the buses at the same time. One time they said classes were still on then and about 3PM they finally called off classes because the brake lines on the buses were freezing.

RE: List a "winter" memory you have while you were at NIU
My first year, on Friday night of finals week, I just got out of my last final at Cole Hall, it was dark out, seemed deserted, and was snowing heavily. Everything was very quiet. Seemed very eerie.

I also remember the long walk back from the Math-Science building to Grant South. It was so cold I stopped in the little convenience store that was in the same strip mall as VCB, just to warm up a bit. That last trudge to the towers where you got the full blast of the wind, was freezing.

Loved attending NIU basketball games at Chick Evans Field House in 1971/72 (my freshman year). I will never forget watching Jim Bradley, Jerry Zeilinski, Larry Turner, Billy Harris and Larry Jackson as our starting five.

We would get up early in the morning so we could line up for tickets when the box office opened. All of the games sold out early in those days. The field house was small but it was loud and you were very close to the court. Made for a great venue to watch a great team!

Walking 3 days a week from Stevenson to class in Altgeld. Then 10 minute walk/run from Altgeld to PE class at the stadium.

Day before a final that I was not looking forward to and rather than studying or getting a good nights sleep I was up all night downloading songs off of Napster and DBZ music videos off of Scour.

I was chatting online with random people and managed to come across someone who said they were a chick from Austria. Conversation was rather superficial so the weather came up. At that time DeKalb was having one of those -60deg wind chill with 60mph wind/blizzard storms. I told this person how cold it was and they flat out didn't believe me. They told me it rarely even gets that cold in Siberia and no way was it that cold where I was. I sent the link to the weather bug local live readings. After a min of sending the link the person just ended the conversation and logged off.

The sun was coming up so I decided that I should go to bed. As I lay down over the dorm PA system the announcement was made that all classes (aka finals) were canceled that day. And I went to bed with a big smile.

Kind of random but one of my most memorable PG rated winter night at NIU.

I was in Grant South 6b as a Sophomore. That weather was so so brutal. We tried to go play snow football, but it hurt too bad after like 5 minutes.

I was a freshmen in Lincoln that year and was slated to be done with Finals on the Monday. They called school off that day and I had to stay until Thursday. A bunch of us ended up getting cafeteria food and playing "Worms" on Playstation, after realizing it was too cold to go out for anything after our snowball fight outside was brought inside because of the weather.

Walking back from Ottos to Eco Park on a 0 degree night. I made it Lucinda, saw the Late Night Ride and literally jumped in front of the moving van to have them pick me up.

Watching Illinois State with Doug Collins at the Field House. The place was over sold so the fans sat in front of the bleachers on the hardwood floor 8 rows deep. The front row was sitting one foot from the out of bounds line. Best game, best player, and loudest game I ever saw at NIU. Unbelievable memories.

RE: List a "winter" memory you have while you were at NIU
Walking from Grant North to Wirtz to make the 8:00 am lectures in January was the worst. I swore that no place in earth was ever colder. Although most of those days are a blur, I seem to remember In the early 80’s going with guys from the dorm to play basketball in the evenings under the stands at Huskies Stadium.

I couldn’t agree more with the comments about the fieldhouse. After graduating, I loved to bring my kids there to watch basketball, it was such a great atmosphere that we didn’t mind the cold walk back to the car.
