But he definitely played in enough games to burn his forth season this year, so I find it hard to believe he would be given another season by the NCAA.
Has Cody redshirted? I can't remember if he played as a true freshman.

No, he played as a true freshman. But that doesn't matter. Typically, you can only get a redshirt if you play in less than 30% of the games in a season (bowl games don't count), and you didn't play in any games the 2nd half of the season. He played in 5 games this year, so 5/13 is 38%. NCAA would have to grant a special waiver, and I don't believe they do that often, if at all.

Do they do it on the number of games - or the number of quarters for each game? He played in 17 quarters up to the injury. If they go by total number of quarters - it would be 52 for the year (without bowl game) that puts him just above the 30% level - so maybe that gets some extra consideration for a waiver ( it would be 30.6%). Don't know where I heard it before, but I thought they went to quarters played to determine total games played - and if it was a full game, it was counted as 4 quarters regardless of whether you played in all 4 quarters.

Just guessing and hoping - since I didn't think there was any possibility he would be back.

I don't see anything in the rules regarding quarters. It has to apply to all sports anyway, and not all have quarters.

I couldn't find anything either. 30% is not very much - essentially no more than 3 games for anyone.

So, did anyone clarify this. Is he coming back for bowl game, coming by for a 5th yr or was it all nothing.

btw he played 4 games and a couple snaps out of 14 games. so if they can make a case to waive the 3 plays he was in during the 5th game he would be under 30% for the year.

From what I read, the bowl games do not count as part of the season for the redshirt - which makes sense since it would not treat everyone the same if the team someone that got hurt did not make it to a bowl game.

Would he even want to come back - or is he ready to give the NFL a shot?

I don't think this goes any further and he won't be back for another season. Although he might be granted another year by the NCAA if he claimed he would use it as a graduate transfer - and then went to a Power 5 team.

Next QB up better be practicing the heck out of throwing the football, that's all I can say. To expect another Logan Woodside would not be fair, but the receiving corps will not be the weak link next year. (But wouldn't it be amazing if the were?)

Yeah, I don't know what to think about this. If it were a done deal, you might think someone in the press would have reported on it by now. I'm reminded of back when the coaches seemed very confident Ely would get his 6th year, but that didn't happen.

So, I guess we will just wait and see.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't believe nobody in the press is aksing the question or if it has been confirmed to be true that an article has not been written.

Me too, because I could hand it to the RBs. Presuming I could handle the snap without breaking anything. Maybe we'll be best off with the wildcat, I'll just stand there taking late hits. uh, one late hit. Then I think we'd need a new QB. And a new stretcher.

As often as we had low snaps this year your back would go fielding that first one.

Maybe he meant he (Candle) would be back next year, but may not coach the bowl game against Appy State because of the way it ended last year against them....

may as well keep this going until official word comes out. Would be amazing if he was given another year. Maybe the NCAA has some compassion for a guy that was a senior, did not redshirt, has already graduated, has a shot at the NFL, but lost out on his chance to showcase his talents because of a serious injury that ended his season. I doubt it, but I'll give them the benefit of that doubt right now.

So the NCAA has nothing to do with this, we're just bad at figuring up the math. 5/14 < .3

Interesting question now though - since he gets that hardship, does it qualify for the grad transfer rule? I'd bet an Ohio State or Michigan would love to have that kid for a year. And he could do worse for showcasing his talent for the NFL.

29.3 percent. Can't cut it much closer than that. It would be fantastic to have him back. (I think he could start.) He'll graduate a Rocket, though. Whatever he thinks is best for his chances at the next level, if that's what he wants, is the way to go.

Don’t know that he’d start given the freshmen coming in, but he could add some depth to the receiver corps, maybe be a backup on kick returns and get some special team snaps.
