WBB Assist Club Dinner
Monday night we attended the women’s basketball SIG, Assist Club, dinner. We had a chance to chat with the coaches, players, support staff, and Brian Mann who oversees WBB development.

We spent time talking to two of the new assistant coaches Lee Aduddell and Tasha Brown (with whom we also sat with during dinner). Both coaches found their way to Rice when recommended by mutual acquaintances upon learning of Coach Langley’s needs. While each has a player position they are assigned, it was stressed how the entire staff shares duties including building game plans.

The players introduced themselves giving us information on their hometown, major, college, and a fun fact. A number of the players mentioned they had spent part of the summer abroad, some in conjunction with their area of study. Almost half of the team has a STEM major. The tightness of the team came through as they laughed and joked as each player gave her information.

During dinner in addition to Coach Brown and three other donors we sat with Jr Lauren Grisby (we sat with her last year as well) and Fr Alexah Chrisman. Chrisman, who is a bioengineering major, had told everyone her fun fact was that her older brother played football for Ohio State. After getting home and looking him up I found out he is a RS kicker who was one of the top kicking recruits nationwide. His stats this year are excellent.

Coach Langley spoke at length after the players left to study. She indicated that in spite of three season ending injuries (and another that hopefully won’t be) that she felt good about the team and its play thus far. She praised their ability to play out of position and being able to handle multiple in game adjustments. She ws disappointed losing at KU (she said several offensive possessions late were critical), but was extremely pleased with the Aggie game.

During the Q&A Langley said that she wants the program to be top 25 and that the response in the interest of recruits is growing. She has signed a 6’6” post and one of the top PG’s in Texas. She also stressed how much she expects transfers to continue to play a key role. She mentioned that almost all of the female college players value the ability to pursue any area of study they want and that often it isn’t allowed at upper P5’s. She only wants the players to be back on campus during the 3rd summer session and only if they have finished their summer internship or study abroad. This policy plays extremely well with the parents of recruits.

When asked what some of the things she has used SIG money for were, she said one of the most important as being able to subscribe to several recruiting services (something few G5’s do or can afford). With a limited recruiting budget this helps her recruit nationally. She also is beginning to build contacts internationally.

Langley said she thought HS basketball in Texas was amongst the best because of the physicality of it. She feels that Texas recruits handle the increased physical demands of the college game much more quickly.

When asked if she has some of the same scheduling problems the men’s team has, she said the problem for them was getting G5 OOC games. The other schools see the improvement in the Owls and don’t want to schedule us. In fact one long time opponent has dropped us from their future schedules. She believes she will be able get good P5’s to come to Tudor in the future.

Thanks for the update, Tiki. I didn't know WBB has a SIG. I'll have join next year when I also plan to add season tickets.

Coach Langley's record isn't there yet but man, I wonder how long before other schools start looking to hire her away?

I could be wrong but I think there are aspects about Rice and building a top 25 team here that might keep her here for longer than we might expect.
