American Athletic ADs should take a note from Coach Huepel's contract
  • Five year, $1.7MM per year contract
  • Staff Salary Pool: $2.5MM
  • Up to $250,000 in bonuses
  • $10MM buyout, if he leaves UCF at any point before the 2020 bowl game
  • Receives 25% of all increase in season ticket revenue from the point he begins his contract
  • If fired without cause, UCF pays 50% of the remaining contract
  • Buyout reduced 50% if Danny White is not the AD

Very similar to Luke Fickell's contract. Extremely front loaded buyout with some out contingencies.

You can do that with new coaches, but not with re-ups or HCs from elsewhere.

This. It all depends on how much leverage the coach has. If the coach is highly sought after for P6 jobs, then fat chance of ever slipping these things into contract. Huepel is still a somewhat unknown quantity, therefore UCF can demand more.

I'm guessing that's why Sumlin balked.

I'm liking Huepel so far, should keep the train rolling in Orlando

no offense but you gave huepel a chance, where many wouldnt..you were his only real chance at being a head coach for maybe some years

houston tried this with less heavy stipulations and numerous coaches (who wanted the job, but were in demand)who backed out because of it, like lincoln riley.
we only asked for a year 1 10million buyout

and "Receives 25% of all increase in season ticket revenue from the point he begins his contract" thats wierd...and interesting

You're all absolutely right, and it definitely was probably a factor in driving Sumlin away, and probably would not have snared even a hire like Huepel if we hadn't been coming off the season we just had, with the talent that's coming back next year.

But Danny White has yet to make a bad hire at any level at UCF, as is evidenced in the hires of Frost, Dawkins, Lovelady, as well as the success seen with the soccer coaches, tennis, and WBB.

The contract was drawn with the intent of primarily keeping the coach we get, and using that coach to grow (with the incentives of the season ticket stipulation), but more importantly, was also able to get a clause in there that protects UCF from an exorbitant buyout if it doesn't work.

Its a win, win. You either keep your coach for a long time or you make a lot of money by selling him. Ten million is 4 years worth of TV money for us.

All of our coaches who have succeeded have received annual, near automatic extensions accompanied with raises since we hired them. No doubt Huepel will be no different if he can even get to a bowl game next year, though with the team coming back, not winning the east next year will be a disappointment.

Indeed. Although, I would guess that UCF is close to highest ever, considering the perfect season so far. It's not like they've only had 5k in the stands.

True, but I wonder if that includes increased price of season tickets, as well. Such if they increased the price of a season ticket by 50%, does he get 25% of that increased revenue. One thing is for sure, Huepel will be pushing those ticket sales.

What is this P6 you speak of? I know of the POWER 5. From my understanding this contract belongs to a G5 conference team. 05-stirthepot
