RE: Bloomgren's coaching staff
The largest assistant salary pool in C-USA is FIU at $1.37mm.
When Mack signed his initial contract in 2013, he was making 180k. Given the success he's had, I would have to guess that he's now making somewhere in the low-mid 200's. Call it 225k for argument's sake. Given that he's taking a lesser title, I imagine we had to pay him 275-300k to come.
Brian Smith is Michigan's lowest paid assistant, scheduled to bring home "only" 150k this season. I bet we're getting him for about 200-250k.
Hopefully we've stepped up to pay our position coaches somewhere in the 100-150k range rather than the 50-70k range. That'd put our assistant salary pool among the best in C-USA (currently FAU, FIU, and UNT).

You're not the only one. I tried to find the article online, and gave up, but cut-and-paste doesn't work to well in the modern web...

Played for Bloomgren at Catawba.
Mercer is in the Southern Conference and currently actually ranked ahead of us by Sagarin.
So I guess this would be a demotion of sorts.

Makes sense. But Rice OC is probably a better stepping stone than HC at NCCU. Rice OC's went on to become head coaches of P5 schools more than once under Bailiff.

Plus the MEAC/SWAC champs play in the Celebration Bowl now, instead of qualifying for the FCS playoffs, so there’s basically no shot to add “FCS national championship” to your resume if you’re a head coach at one of those schools.

Yeah, you could say that, and generally probably right.
That said, Southern Miss’ Coach (Jay Hopson), jumped right from Alcorn State where he actually had a slightly worse record than Mack.
He done OK at USM (15-10 overall, I believe).

RE: Bloomgren's coaching staff
In case the various tweets were not sufficient evidence, Coach Smith and Coach Mack are now following each other on twitter. Coach Mack is also following various other individuals associated with Rice. Perhaps this is getting too far from the source, but amidst his Rice-related follows, Coach Mack started following (and was followed by) Reggie Barlow, head coach at Virginia State. Barlow does not have any other Rice-related follows or followers.

A bit more info on Mack from the source of the original tweet...
"I Heard it from coaching contacts. Also, Alabama state wanted him bad but his old coach is at Rice. And he has aspirations for a FBS HC job one day"

Jerry Mack's Wikipedia bio main text says that he is says the current Head Coach at NC Central, but the side thing has his current position as assistant coach at Rice.
His only previous experience as an OC was one year at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the SWAC.
The head coach there is former Washington linebacker Monte Coleman. Bailiff fans might be interested to find out that Coleman's record is 38-62 after ten years.

40-71 actually now.
He only makes 150 grand.. so I guess if the players and their 25(0) love him.. its a relatively low cost investment. That and winning the SWAC gets you even less interest than winning CUSA (read: zero).
But still.. amazing that he is still employed.

Official-- just posted on ESPN...
http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-07...64918961-4
Quote:New Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren is hiring Michigan secondary coach Brian Smith as his defensive coordinator and North Carolina Central head coach Jerry Mack (31-15, four seasons, three MEAC titles) to run the Owls' offense. Bloomgren worked with Smith at the New York Jets a decade ago, and with Mack at Delta State prior to that.

Look for former Oregon State OC Kevin McGiven to perhaps join the Rice staff as the QBs coach.
Was FootballScoop's 2014 QB COY while at Utah State.
