More legalized sports betting?
http://www.ocregister.com/2017/12/09/all...eme-court/

Supreme Court case would throw out a law that limited legalized sports betting to Nevada.

Would this lead to more point shaving scandals? Fewer?

Not trying to start a thread on whether it should be legal, but the impact on college sports if it did become legal in more states.

RE: More legalized sports betting?
Great find and nice piece of journalism by the OCR.

I am not a regular gambler, but I am very interested in the topic.

For all of the discussion about why the NFL's TV ratings are down, no one is talking about the decline of fantasy sports, and in particular the decline in same day fantasy betting following the Draft Kings/Fan Duel scandal. Fantasy sports created huge interest in games in which fans had no rooting interest and helped drive NFL ratings to record levels. Traditional point spread gambling has an even greater potential to do so.

Roger Goodell talks about wanting to drive league wide revenues to $25 billion. They're currently at $13-14 billion. TV coverage has reached its saturation point and it's hard to see anything beyond normal incremental growth. Indeed, while new media may provide a boost, it's possible traditional cable money may even go down.

The answer is pretty obvious. Legalize point spread gambling. In England, you can bet on the game you're attending, or any other game, at a betting window inside the stadium, or at a retail shop in your town, or on line. The NBA is already there, but can't drive such a change by itself. Not only would this drive TV ratings, the NFL and NBA should insist on getting a licensing fee for allowing gambling on their games. Even at 1% of the value of the bet, they'd each make billions per year.

As far as the impact on the college game, gambling is already going on. Legalizing it might actually provide a system of enforcement that reduces the risk of point shaving. If my licensing idea were to happen, it would also provide another large revenue stream.

I think fewer. There is going to be records of those that bet large sums against the odds. I think the back room bookies would balk at these bets, letting the "legal" bookies take the high risk bets.
