RE: Conference USA proves again that it’s a failing model
Not sure how the Conference is Down, this year, theirs one conference ahead of us in Bowls and that's the ACC not the Sec or AAC, not sure about the payouts have not added that up yet, sure it goes to the SEC everything else does, and Basketball seems to be doing pretty good against the big boys for a one bid league. Try a accurate comparision. Leagues, Attentendances, Enrollment and fan support. What's the attendance for the MAC and AAC and population in the towns and cities in which we play in. Who's coming out and who's not has tv and the internet picked the revenue where the attendance has not. Can understand attendance in Miami being what it is, theirs so much to do and not sure the attendance will drop off next year, year two should be better with more experience its a long summer and fall comes quick for the interest, its always more exciting the first two weeks of games played theirs has been a drop of for attendance at most schools. Most people are fans of other schools, But theirs a population in Birmingham that grew up elsewhere and want to see competitive football and that's in Birmingham, When the new Stadium will be built where the fans can Daves it (Pub) and walk to the stadium and Johny Rocket it (Restarurant) watch even more attendance think were doing dang good to be working with what we are working with. And Imagine a Holiday Inn to slip into before and after the game did that once or twice at the BJCC.

Theirs a model to follow,.,

RE: Conference USA proves again that it’s a failing model
For what it's worth, these are the universities that UAB has identified as its "peers" based on academics, financial health, research levels, medical care, and athletics. This list is very recent and is part of the current strategic plan that isn't even finished yet

Quote:University of California – Irvine
University of Cincinnati
University of Illinois – Chicago
University of South Florida
Virginia Commonwealth University
Rutgers University

Two universities were selected as aspirational peers, since they excelled in areas that are particularly important for the future of UAB, including research expenditures and enrollment:

University of California – San Diego
University of Pittsburgh

Athletics isn't the most important thing that UAB does, but it was included in the criteria they used for picking these institutions.

Important for another goal I think UAB should strive for, AAU membership, Rutgers, UC Irvine, and UC San Diego are all members so this list leaves me a little optimistic

RE: Conference USA proves again that it’s a failing model
We absolutely must NOT expand our league to more teams that include regional opponents. That is a financial loser, and we may never recover. We must become a power in C-USA, and then look for our opportunity to join the AAC.

What would the AAC want from us? We need to show:

1. Financial commitment with football coaches and facilities (check)
2. A strong TV market for football (check)
This includes our attendance, so we NEED to keep it high!
3. A stadium that fits our program and our league (working on that)
4. A strong commitment to non-football sports (check - mostly)

The only other piece is that we need an advocate or a group of advocates. I'm sure the foundation is ready to be an advocate for the move up. Now, we need our AD to work toward that end. I've talked to him about it, but I'm not sure where his head is.

I hope he doesn't dream too little dreams.

Unfortunately we don't get to hand pick which conference we go to. Although, if there is a major realignment, the AAC will also be involved. Their tv deal won't last much longer, and they are also spread all over the place.

RE: Conference USA proves again that it’s a failing model
This may be something to say, but, I think as a Charter member of C-USA. I think we should stay (it pays dividends to stay with your conference) if UAB were to move to another conference, if a new stadium is built, I would pull for the Big 12. You normally get so called better recruits with a move up (if that's what they call it). But it seems to be a relative discussion cause then your playing higher so called talent week in week out. Would like us to be a frontrunner in the C-USA. For a topic of discussion, UAB - the former conference was changed, I thought we would be the dominant team in Basketball, it did not pan out this way. It shifted to the so called lower teams being more competitive then we were, for some reason in baseball and other teams it does not seem to be as much as a shift in recruits you can sign them either or, if you have a good hard nosed baseball coach.

No one can confirm or Deny that it happened. I'm in the mindset there is some truth to it.

I would presume this is pastense not a future relative comment correct. Like saying Jimbo is coming to UAB this was pastense and not relative to current and future comments correct, Just say, correct cause your speaking in pastense, you have to explain that or people rise up. Quick. And you don't want that.

There are so many mistakes in that post that i literally have no idea what you are trying to say. Can you at least make and effort to write in a format any educated person can understand?

RE: Conference USA proves again that it’s a failing model
One item that MUST be on any list of attributes leading to changing conferences for the better is a demonstration that UAB is no longer the target for harmful actions by the System BOT and its "hired gun" administrators. As long as UAB is perceived (you know what they say about "perception") to be unable to be the boss of its own future, it is doubtful that we can be invited to any new party.

Approving the new football facility was a beginning in that process. A track record to support that change of perception is waiting for further supportive actions by the BOT..

The key isn't that we aren't the target anymore. The key is that we can overcome being the target which now we have more of an ability to do so.

When there is another round of realignment, the AAC will be targeted. We need to be in an attractive position when that happens and climb back in with the old C-USA teams now in the AAC.

We needed to be ready when the AAC formed, but we weren't allowed to be. We are at a point now where we control our own destiny more than at any point in my memory as a UAB fan. We need to do what it takes to get picked next time, and there is nothing more important to that than butts in seats and people donating money.

Those other conference's powers have memories of 12/2/14 too. They are going to demand more than crossed fingers and "#The Return" as signs that UAB is "captain of its own ship". What signs will be good enough? I don't know, and perhaps no one else does either. It's a building process, and we can hope when that time arrives, we will be ready.

The competition will certainly be fierce and capital backing for the university and its athletics will be important ingredients in their decision. Good indicators would be: Who are our main competitors? and What financial backing do they bring to the table?

The first big sign is a $22 million football complex.

Another sign is a group of rich businessmen backing UAB Football.

Another sign is attendance for football games and to a lesser degree basketball games.

Another sign is that our market is competitive. HA! We have the number one TV market in America for college football! Yes, it revolves around other schools, but it shows that people here will follow college football, even when it isn't there first choice team. Advertisers don't care if the watchers of AAC games love Alabama or Auburn more than UAB. They care that the people are watching the UAB games and seeing their ads.

The next sign needs to be a new stadium.
