RE: Conference USA proves again that it’s a failing model

We are basically at a point that it is all about who the fans feel are more interesting opponents and who may interest more fans to buy tickets. The conference I like is definitely one a lot of other fans might not, but it just based on teams I prefer to us play based on my perception. And that's all we have. There is no great divide or supremacy of one school over another. We are all basically on the same level (though one really needs to raise more funds, I honestly worry how long ULM can support its entire program on that budget) and all will go through ups and downs.
Fans get all bent out of shape about inane things because, basically, they want their program to be wanted and have the talking heads say nice things about them.
What pleases the fans egos may not be the best thing for their program in the long run.
Like the P6 thing with the AAC. They basically are disparaging the programs that they normally are able to schedule. They are basically making it harder to cooperate with their peers and putting their programs on sort of a weird island. But it sure feels good for the ego.
As I've said before, I want to be associated with programs that have a football culture...that have fans who care. I don't care if we have to travel an extra couple hundred miles to reach them. I don't care if they are in a small town. I don't care if the talking heads like them less than a program in a bigger market.

I really liked your comparison to the AAC, ark.
And I agree. I'd much rather be associated with programs that have a football culture over anything else. But I think the issue both Sun Belt and CUSA deal with are having many young programs. It takes time to build a football culture. The first year Florida Atlantic played was 2001.
FIU 2002
Costal Carolina 2003
South Alabama 2009
Old Dominion 2009
Georgia State 2010
UTSA 2011
Charlotte 2013
Hopefully, we're able to build up these programs and both Sun Belt and CUSA's football cultures will benefit in the process. I think it's just going to take some time.
