South Alabama is getting a new 25,000 $72 million stadium.
looks nice and expandable, also looks like alot for just $72 million in comparison to what we are doing especially in the press box area. hope our second phase will really beef up our stadium but im just happt we are finally ready to get this done
How in the world are they getting all that for only $8 million more than us, when we already have the game day building built? It doesn't look like we're getting much of a stadium for the money, compared to others. Also, I've heard from a person who follows the ODU program closely and is "in the know" that the "2nd phase" may never happen as an actual phase. Supposedly they don't even have drawings for it. Any improvements to our stadium will be incremental, not a full-scale "phase 2". Thinking maybe some new suites several years down the road and and new end zone at some point off in the future. If demand increases, perhaps a second deck could be added one day. It all depends on money, which this person said wasn't coming in as quickly as it seemed. But whatever happens will probably be piece meal.
The demolition of the old stadium is a big part the total project cost for us. They are building on existing fields.

I would also look at timeframes. Ours is being built in a year. Their's will be open for the 2020 season.

RE: NEW stadium construction
Still wondering how construction will star in July unless they had everything ready and lined up waiting for approval. For Example we had land transferred and BOR approval this Spring for a new convocation center. We dont expect design and rendering until next winter at the earliest.

That makes sense, but I guess I didnt realize demo was that expensive. Also, their $72 million includes a field and scoreboard (plus all that nice brick, suites, press box, end zone, locker rooms, game day building etc). Our $65 million doesn't even include the scoreboard and field. Maybe the one year turn around hurts like another poster said. If thats the case, it may have been better to play elsewhere for a year to get a high quality stadium like USAs that will compete well for recruits and donor money. The more I look at our stadium and the buzz of seeing the new drawings wears off, the more underwhelmed I become. Its just disappointing knowing we have to compete against these much nicer facilities for recruits, sponsor money and fans. ODU deserves nice things too.

I agree, that original Populous design was so nice and its what my heart really wanted. Feels like everything got watered down. I know its super expensive to build these facilities, if i was a billionaire it would be the nicest one in the state by far.

You are joking right ? We will never see a 2nd phase and we are getting screwed on the 1st phase. Poor overall acquisition management in my opinion. We spent way too much money studying our navel and had virtually no competition in the design and construction bid phase. We are not even closing in the student end zone section.

we have pretty nice facilities at ODU, I am sure the new stadium will be built up. Im sure after how everything transpired our secretive school maybe a lil more secretive when releasing building plans because it kind of bit them in the ass.

We just keep getting screwed by our higher ups and some of our fans can’t do anything but say “please sir may I have some more?”.

Looks pretty boring. It also looks like they can dig down into a bowl. A hell of a lot cheaper.

Pretty sure that if they dig down they would end up with a swimming pool instead.

Downright abysmal acquisition management. If a federal acquisition went down in this manner, it would be tied up in protests and people would be going to jail.

Depends on who you are quoting. yours is Kevin Bacon in Animal House, the other is from the book and movie Oliver. But you are close the Oliver line is only about 125 years older than Kevin Bacon.

Wasn't gruel that Oliver Twist was asking more of?

Several trees are being cut down today in front of and beside Koch Hall in order to begin utility work for the new stadium.
