Part 3 of stadium reports

"ODU is the least expensive of any doctoral university in Virginia"... fine, not a bad thing necessarily, but I hate it when ODU brags about being cheap. People know you get what you pay for, and to me it positions ODU as the "Dollar General" of universities. I don't think you want your main branding differentiators to be "cheap" and "diverse". Raise tuition a little and invest that money into top level professors, high tech classrooms, innovation labs, a new student center, improved student experiences and service, more dorms and increased security/police force.

And it is impressive they did the stadium on time.

I suppose, but in a time where student debt is through the roof and students are becoming less able to afford to go to college it might be all someone needs to see in order to choose ODU over somewhere else.

RE: NEW stadium construction
I don't know. I hear a lot of complaining about out of control student debt, but don't see a lot of downward pressure being exerted on the cost of college by the choices of students. The fact is the system is broken in such a way that it encourages kids that have know idea what they are doing financially to choose a path that will leave them saddled with a ton of debt before they realize the consequences of that, then nobody wants to point the finger back at the university that are charging an unreasonable amount for what should be the simple task of providing an education. They just look at government and ask what are you going to do about all this debt. Never do they point the finger where the problem actually lies.

So then isn't it a good thing that ODU doesn't charge as much as other universities? Wouldn't that make it a better custodian of public funds and help it be an institution capable of true upward social mobility?

First, I don't think a SCHOOL'S mission is to foster social mobility. Its mission is to educate.

Second, with the system as it is, ODU and all of its graduates are affected by its reputation, therefor the importance of reputation unfortunately outweighs the importance of cost mitigation under the existing (broken) system.

Third, the issue with cost is the arms race that has been created by unfettered access to unlimited, guaranteed student loans for anyone at any time. There are no market pressures on universities because the prospective students can and will pay whatever the universities decide to charge. Let's face it, that new Student Center with the water slide attracts students and causes 17 year old kids to ignore the fact that they are going to have $200,000 in debt when they graduate. As a result schools raise tuition, build the amusement park, and get more applications. It's a vicious cycle and it will not be remedied until someone points the finger at the student loan programs and figures out how to change them in a meaningful way. The reality is that there is no way you can convince me that it costs $50,000 a year to educate undergrads.

I'm getting my doctoral degree in Higher Ed Administration. You would be shocked to see how expensive it is top pay for everything a university pays for. Tuition covers about 1/3 of ODUs budget.

I work for a school similar to ODU, but smaller. We cost 75k a year before aid. A 75k price tag does not make a school high quality. UVA is super cheap as is W&M. I would say people think of them as high quality institutions

Were single ticket seats set at one price for the whole stadium?

$40 - $50 for Norfolk St
$50 - $60 for ECU

plus fees around $6-$7

ODU is offering 3 games miniplan tickets packages for $105, it's any 3 games with the benches with backrest. That's a pretty good deal.
