This IS EXACTLY How Our Bowl Situation Should Work
This year is a good example of how our bowl situation should ideally work. We claimed the access bowl slot so our champ is headed to a NYD game. Because we had a guaranteed slot in a quality bowl, the CCG runner up (Memphis) will be headed to the Liberty Bowl. Had the CCG result been reversed, UCF would have been in the Liberty with Memphis playing in a NYD Bowl.
So, effectively--in 2017 we see how our bowl line-up would play out every year IF we had a contract bowl and at least one other quality bowl. Its also an indication of how our post season would play out if we can simply capture a tie to a SINGLE Liberty Bowl level post season game and win the G5 access slot more often than not. While having no contract bowl is not ideal---at least in this scenario--we can guarantee a quality post season for our conference champ EVERY year and our runner up most years. Its also a lot closer to the realm of the possible. We will actually have a shot (granted a long shot) of landing a mid-tier bowl like the Liberty as soon as 2019. We probably cant do anything about a contract bowl until the CFP expires in 9 years.
The bowl situation is probably the worst part of the AAC and the most difficult issue to fix. Honestly, I think the bowl issue will be tougher to correct than the financial issues. Im actually fairly confident we will see significantly more money in the next TV deal. Im not as confident our bowl situation will be "significantly" better in the next bowl cycle. Im almost certain there will be some incremental improvement in our bowl line up in 2019....but "significant" improvement (like getting a Liberty level Bowl) is going to take some aggressive innovative thinking and more than a little luck. I hope Aresco has a few tricks up his sleeve.

I've said this before, but the AAC should join with Army and BYU for bowl affiliations. In that scenario, the AAC affiliation could add annual bids to the Las Vegas and Armed Forces bowls against P5 opponents and have a shot to add the Liberty bowl - at least occasionally, if not annually.
Yes, BYU and Army would often play in one of the better bowls - but not always. And, there is a prestige bump to say that the AAC is affiliated with 5 or 6 bowls against P5 opponents...and ample opportunity to win some of those games.

Agreed - the failure of some P5, especially the SEC, to fill all their slots has given us a lineup of bowls that would be ideal if it were our actual contracted lineup of bowls.
Will be very interesting seeing how we perform in them, from fan attendance and results standpoints.

I'm thinking Memphis attendance at the Liberty Bowl will be acceptable, lol.
