We're ecstatic over it on the Rice board. The university paid well to get him for sure. He has NFL experience and has turned down several head coaching offers. Bloomgren knows how to recruit good talent to a place like Rice. We're very excited.

It's being done in three or four phases from what I understand. The endzone facility was completed a little over a year ago. A renovation of the west side will be next. Construction should start sometime over the next 18 months. But yes I agree that a major renovation has been long overdue. We sat on splintered wooden bleachers until they were finally replaced ten or so years ago.

Home side is next but it’s hard to raise $ when you’re 1-11 and need a new coach. They sent out a survey to donors a year ago asking for priorities. Looked like we are going to have a big club level with AC and premium food, put in some high $ suites potentially and a new press box. Plus new bathrooms and everything else on that side.

Something everyone has always wanted was real chairs for the lower deck but I’ve always heard its an issue with the spacing between rows compared to bleachers. The depth of the concrete steps can’t be changed.

Another thing I’ve heard is once you start making major renovations we have to make the whole stadium disability compliant and some of our ramps and such from the 50s are too steep for current laws. That’s a message board rumor though for what it’s worth.
